Called “Round 1: No Room for Mistakes,” more than 10,000 spectators packed the downtown stands on April 7th to see 31 drivers take their cars through the Grand Prix track’s tight turns. In drifting, the cars slide sideways at top speeds and the winners are selected on the basis of technical style.

Established on the streets of Japan, Drifting is a world wide competitive sport that challenges each racer’s driving ability and control. Formula Drift provides a venue for professionals in North America to pit their skills against the world’s top drifters.

Mitsuru Haruguchi of Japan was awarded top driver of the day at Long Beach, and Gittin finished 4th. Gittin is sponsored by K&N Engineering and has used K&N Air and Oil Filters for ten years. “K&N is the right product for me,” said Gittin. “The technology works.”

Gittin is also preparing for the 33rd Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 13th and 14th. Gittin, along with Ryan Tuerck and Chris Forsberg, all K&N sponsored drifters will compete at Long Beach for Team Drift Alliance.

All K&N powersports "spin-on" oil filters have a 17 mm nut on top of a heavy duty metal can for easy removal. K&N Powersports oil filters use resin impregnated cellulose filter media. This allows for higher flow rates while providing outstanding filtration.

USAC Gerhardt Classic is About Fast Laps for K&N Sponsored Racer

His goal was to be consistent, smooth and fast. “When we got to the track, we pushed out for our first set of practice laps and my first set in a pavement sprint car,” he said. “I used the session to get the feel of the car.”

The K&N Engineering sponsored racer did well in his second set of practice laps. “I worked up to speed and pushed the car a little harder each lap,” said Kaplan. “The V8 360 cubic inch engine can put out 780 horsepower.”

During the third and last practice set there was a problem with the throttle. “My crew chief found the problem and plans to change the springs before Madera,” said Kaplan. “I noticed great horsepower when I cornered because of our K&N Air Box. Our K&N Oil Filter also did really well. It helps keep debris out of the engine. I’m grateful to K&N for supplying us with the best Air and Oil Filters in the business.”

Kaplan tested well overall and said he is looking forward to the Gerhardt Classic, the first USAC event in Kaplan's 12 pavement only race schedule.

They are called Metal Masher, Steel Bender and Hell’s Revenge. Not for the faint of heart these tough trails are only for the best rock crawlers and 4 x 4s with highly modified equipment.

Lovell Racing just returned from WE-Rock #2 in Globe, Arizona and Moab, Utah for the Moab Jeep Safari and XRRA # 1. “The trip was fast paced and stretched out over 11 days,” said Brad Lovell. “We started in Arizona.”

Lovell piloted his FABTECH Ranger with K&N Engineering products through the technical courses laid out by WE-Rock. “The second course had a huge bonus climb that the Ranger clawed up using every bit of 240 horsepower,” said Lovell. “The climb was only conquered by one other team on day one.” Brad and Roger Lovell were in first place at the end of the first day.

Day two in Arizona was challenging for Team Lovell. “We completed another death defying bonus climb, but simple communication errors cost us the win,” said Lovell. “We fell into third place in a field of 19, only two points away from second place. We now have a strong lead in the WE-Rock Series.”

The team left Arizona headed for the 41st Moab Jeep Safari. “The mammoth event is easily the largest in the rock crawling community and the weather could not have been better,” said Roger Lovell. “Before the competition we took the opportunity to catch a little time in the dunes. The Ranger rock crawler maxed out at 6500 rpm and about five feet of air, and I have yet to find the limit on our new higher geared racer.”

Team Lovell pulled the short straw in the XRRA Moab Rock Race and was first to run on two of four courses. “In the sport of rock crawling it is unfortunate to be first,” said Brad Lovell. “There is no chance to determine exactly how a vehicle will react to the terrain. Courses also become faster as the day progresses.” On the first run the brothers lost around 20 seconds. Team Lovell recovered and ended up within 3 seconds of the fastest time on the second course.

Roger Lovell was first among the rookies at the end of the day and in seventh place out of a field of 38. “Switching roles was a challenge,” said Brad Lovell, who usually drives as Roger Lovell works the course from the outside. “We are looking for wins but pleased with seventh place. It validates the vehicle and proves there is more than one driver on the team.

The next race for Team Lovell will be at Chambon, France for the Chambon-Sur-Lac rock crawl trail and ride on April 28 and 29.

K&N Sprint Car Racer Jonathan Allard Continues Quest for Golden State Championship

Allard qualified fourth on Friday with the K&N Filters No. 0. He recorded the fastest lap of the session and was able to line up on the outside of the second row in the final heat race. Allard moved up to second place by lap two, but could not pass Shawn Wright. Allard ended the race with a second place finish which guaranteed him a spot in the 25 lap main event.

There is a state mandated 11 pm curfew for all the classes. The night was running long and officials had to cut the laps for the main event back to 20. Allard started on the outside of the fourth row and had to move quickly with the limited amount of laps. By lap nine he was on the back bumper of leader Sean Becker. Allard made contact with another driver and both flipped over at turn three. That was the end of a promising night and finished with the Williams Motorsports K&N Filters No. 0 in fourteenth position.

On Saturday, Allard entered the Golden State Challenge Series at Antioch second in points. He qualified fifth out of 25 cars. Allard was the only driver in the heat who was able to make passes. He made it to the rear of the leader and took the win on the final lap to gain 5 points toward the championship.

“We use K&N Engineering Oil and Air Filters along with K&N’s Carbon Fiber Air Box,” said Allard. “K&N makes the best products, the oil and air filters are easy to use and maintain.”

Allard will compete at Silver Dollar Speedway this Friday night for Round 3 of the Feather Falls Casino point series in Chico. On Saturday he will be at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville for Round 8 of the Golden State Challenge Series.
