Top Drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. Visits K&N Headquarters

Top drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. stopped at K&N Engineering, Inc. in Riverside, California one day after his EZ Lube Team Drift Challenge at Long Beach.

The K&N sponsored racer and his Team Drift Alliance finished 4th overall. “We only had two cars and each scored an eight out of ten,” said Gittin. “We beat two teams that had three or more drivers.”

The teams were judged on speed, angles and crowd reaction. Judges were also looking at each team’s choreography and ability to work together.

Gittin has done demos and events all over the world with Team Drift Alliance. “It’s amazing because as teams we don’t compete against each other in this race, we drive in sync,” he said. “Think of the Blue Angels in the air and how they work together, it’s almost the same for us. Drifting is about going fast, sliding and having smoke streaming out of the back of the car.”

Chris Forsberg and Ryan Tuerck were on Gittin’s team. “I’m very comfortable with them,” said Gittin. “We’ve done some really crazy stuff together on the track. There are always mistakes and if you don’t’ know who you’re driving with enough to read them, there will be problems. It felt good to run with the guys.”

Gittin has put his heart and soul into this sport. He also used K&N products long before starting his professional career. “I read all the flow charts and realized K&N was the best for me because of the abuse I put my cars through,” he said. “When I’m in a cloud of smoke on the track, it’s not just smoke. That cloud is filled with rubber parts and without K&N Air Filters my $40,000 motors would be damaged. K&N Oil Filters also keeps metal debris out of my engines.”

Gittin will spend a few days in the California sun before he heads back to Virginia. “I love Long Beach,” he said. “It’s like no other event. The crowds are great and it’s definitely a thumbs-up situation all the way.”

“We came on at the end and almost got the win,” said Schatz. “It was important for us to come to Eldora and challenge for the win. It’s no secret that this hasn’t been my best track, but we’ve really gained on it the last year or so. We were strong early in the night and in the dash, but the track fooled me just a bit by how slow it got.”

Schatz’s second place finish was also his third consecutive runner-up at Eldora Speedway, following last year’s runner-up finishes in July and August. Friday's race will air on SPEED-TV May 13th at 2 p.m. est.

The ParkerStore Team will stay in Ohio this week. They return to action on Friday night at Attica Raceway Park. On Saturday they will travel to southwest Indiana at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.

Benito Guerra Jr. holds the title of youngest Mexican Rally Champion in the World. He drove a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 equipped with K&N Engineering Air Filters.

“We were having a great rally and at the end of the day I was in the top 10 of the production class,” said Guerra. “At the end of the second day my suspension broke and I lost a wheel. I had to restart the next day but my penalties hurt our times. On day three we retired with a broken gearbox. The one thing we don’t have to worry about is our K&N Air Filters. They don’t fail while racing, ever.”

France’s Sebastien Loeb took first place in his new Citroen C4WRC, ahead of Marcus Gronholm and Mikko Hirvonen.

The season is far from over for Guerra. His next rally will take place in Argentina on May 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th.

The Dakar Rally fit the bill for this extreme racer. It is the toughest motor race in the world and covers 5000 miles of grueling terrain over 16 days. The heart of the race is in the middle of the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert where temperatures can reach 130 degrees every day.

K&N Engineering sponsored ATV overall class winner Machacek in the 2007 Rally Lisboa-Dakar. “He used K&N Air Filters (RU-2780) during the entire race on his Yamaha,” said Robert Hordossy of K&N Filters in Europe. "Our products worked well during the extreme conditions of the Dakar."

Defending World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz and his ParkerStore Team will return to the high banks of Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio this weekend for two nights of racing.

“I’m really looking forward to racing some more as our schedule picks up over the next few weeks,” said Schatz. “But I’m more excited that we’re headed to Eldora. It’s one of those places where we haven’t been real stellar in the past, but last year we had real good finishes. We were just one spot short of first place both times. I think we may finally have things figured out there, but it’s been quite a challenge for us to get to that point.”

Even though Schatz admits to having a tough time at the track, he’s been a consistent top ten finisher at Eldora Speedway since 1996. That consistency carried over to the 2007 campaign, where he finished in the top six 11 times in 12 starts. He has three victories and nine top three finishes and is 12 points behind leader Joey Saldana.

Schatz and the ParkerStore Team use K&N Engineering products. “The K&N Airbox works flawlessly for us at each race,” he said. “We are able to attain maximum horsepower. K&N builds a superior product.”

Saturday’s race at the track will be the first televised World of Outlaws race of 2007. SPEED TV and ESPN2 will carry the programming. “It provides great exposure for our sponsors,” said Schatz. “The television schedule includes races at some of the most exciting tracks in the country. It should help attract new fans and help the sport.”

Cold weather slowed the team down last weekend and forced the cancellation of last Saturday's race at Pevely, MO. "If you look at Eldora's races in April over the past ten years, we haven't always been able to race both nights," said Schatz. "We've had snow and rain stop shows in the past. We're hoping the weather warms up so we can work in the track enough to have a surface that offers plenty of passing and action in order to put on a good show."
