Kathryne Minter competes full-throttle in the ASCS Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series

A quick glance at the beautiful Kathryne Minter and it would be hard to tell that she is a talented and competitive driver of the 2009 ASCS Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series. This 18-year-old racer's weapon of choice is the # 13 Maxim chassis powered by WESMAR Racing Engines, which is equipped at all times with a K&N Sprint Car Style Air Box.

"I definitely notice that by combining K&N filters with Purple Oil, I see a difference in the longevity of my motor," says Kathryne. "I don't have to worry if I'm gonna be able to make it through the next race. I may not have the biggest motor, but because it's so much cleaner and healthier, it runs a lot better than some of my competitors' motors who are not using K&N filters."

Kathryne's racing career may have begun only four years ago, but the 2006 graduate of the Lyn St. James Driver Development Program has won more than 60 feature races. In 2007 Kathryne finished 8th in points for the ASCS Gulf South Region, and also received 'Rookie of the Year' honors.

During the 2008 season, she ran the ASCoT National Series Tour and finished 11th in points. Kathryne was awarded with perfect attendance and also accepted the 'Young Lion Award' for being the youngest driver to complete the tour.

When on the track, Kathryne doesn't think twice about being a female racer in a male-dominated sport. "We are all the same when you get on the race track," she says. "I'm just another car, another number."

However, there is no question that Kathryne gets a lot of attention off-track. "I try to set a good example at all times and maintain a good attitude, especially because I have a lot of younger fans," she says. "I am very lucky to have fans that support me no matter how I finish."

This dedicated racer recently graduated high school, which was not an easy task considering her busy schedule. Kathryne studied an intense curriculum by taking classes online, all so she could attend every race on the national tour. Once a ballerina and soccer player, Kathryne gave up both activities to devote all her time to racing. "Racing had everything I was looking for; the physical aspect, the adrenaline rush, the competition - I didn't want to do anything else!"

Next up on the schedule for Kathryne Minter Racing, the team heads to the ASCS National Tour race at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Monster Truck Action Takes a Break to Help Kids With Cancer

Black Stallion, Iron Warrior, Screamin’ Demon and Black Jack Monster Trucks took time off from competition for a benefit car show in Hagerston, Maryland. Proceeds from the show went to Katie Stains and Josh Forsythe, two area teens with bone cancer.

“Josh was not able to attend,” said Black Stallion’s Michael Vaters. “He was in the hospital at the time. We were able to meet Katie. She is a lovely young lady and we were moved by her strength.” The benefit raised more than $11,000 for the care of the two teens.

The benefit was a important break in the Monster Spectacular tour for Vaters. After it was over the Black Stallion owner and driver flew back to Canada where he faced off against the reigning Monster Champion Jim Koehler in Avenger at the Scotia Bank Place in Ottawa. The other competing drivers were Trey Myers in the Iron Warrior, Steve Koehler in Brutus and Steve Hearley in Godzilla.

Vaters took the wheelie competition in the K&N Ford powered Black Stallion. Iron Warrior beat Avenger in the first round of racing, but lost to Godzilla in the next round.

The next stop on the Monster Spectacular tour was the City of Trois Rivieres in Quebec, Canada. “It was an outdoor event which meant plenty of room to open up the monster trucks,” said Vaters. “The crew put a fresh transmission in the K&N Ford powered Black Stallion and I put it to the ultimate test. I made multiple passes over the car stack and two van stacks in the wheelie competition and won the event.” Vaters also took the freestyle win.

Vaters uses K&N air and oil filters on his Monster trucks. "Over my many years in this business I've used a lot of products, but K&N is the only product that can handle the dirty and dusty environment during Monster Jam competitions," said Vaters. "We are known for our wild and crazy driving and the ability to push our engines to the limit. We are hard on our motors and K&N gives us the protection we need for Monster Jam competition."

In the grand finale, Vaters piloted a Kamikaze jet powered 4-wheeler with a 30,000 rpm jet engine. Vaters blasted the jet into the van and burned it to ashes. This was the way Monster Spectacular closed out its final show.

The Black Stallion team is back in the United States and will do another benefit for the American Cancer Society on June 26 in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Crump now has a 31 point lead in the series. “I am on top of the world right now,” said the two-time World Speedway Grand Prix Champion. “There are still six more Grand Prix’s to go so I’m not predicting anything right now. My feet are firmly planted on the ground and I still have a very tough job ahead of me in the Series.”

The World Speedway Grand Prix is currently on a five week break. The top riders will be representing their various countries of record in the World Team Cup from July 11-18.

“It’s important now to keep focused, remain injury free and let the results speak for themselves,” said Crump. “Hopefully I can win a third World Speedway Championship. I also want to thank my sponsors, this win was for them.”

Crump uses K&N products. “K&N air filters are the best in the world,” he said. “I have used K&N exclusively for years and never had a problem. I love the products. K&N is the best for dirt track racing.”

Crump has 98 points, Russia’s Emil Sayfutdinov is second with 67 points and Greg Hancock, USA, rounds out the top three overall with 59 points in the World Speedway Grand Prix Series. Round Six will resume at Daugavpils in Latvia on August 1.

There is a new Metal Mulisha on the racing scene. It is a two-truck team with Brian Deegan and Todd Cuffaro. Deegan is still the bad boy king of the track and Cuffaro is the smooth talking general. Both have a common goal, both come from motorcycle backgrounds and both are in a championship chase in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, (LOORRS).

Deegan rocked his Metal Mulisha followers with a victory at Lake Elsinore, California. The X Games medalist bested Crandon Champion, Rodrigo Ampudia and CORR Champion Robert Naughton in his Rockstar/Metal Mulisha/BF Goodrich Tires sponsored flat black unlimited Ford truck.

Dirt, rock balls the size of fists and tiny boulders flew everywhere as the self proclaimed king of the Metal Mulisha battled Naughton, Ampudia and Marty Hart before taking the lead. Deegan never looked back and claimed the first professional truck racing victory for Metal Mulisha.

Deegan’s teammate Todd Cuffaro also took the podium with a 2nd place finish among a field of trucks at the KALGAARD Lake Elsinore Motorsports Complex.

Cuffaro’s No.46 Nissan Rockstar Metal Mulisha truck was bumped and slammed in mosh pit style during the first lap and a half of competition. Cuffaro pushed back and worked his way toward the top spot. The leader had mechanical problems, and as Cuffaro pushed for the lead on the final lap, a yellow caution was waved. Officials ended the race on the final lap under the yellow caution and Cuffaro was not able to catch the lead racer. As a result, he finished in second place.

Cuffaro and Deegan both fought triple digit temperatures that reached 109 degrees on the short course dirt track. The heat was no big deal for these two tough guys. They have faced more serious problems in the past. Both have experienced a brush with death on two wheels in the past.

Cuffaro moved to off-road cars after breaking his back in a motorcycle crash during the Best in the Desert Tonopah 300 in 2002. Deegan crashed while performing a back flip, lost four pints of blood and a kidney. The duo both agreed that it was nice to have a roll cage in competition.

“I feel a lot safer in trucks,” said Deegan. “It’s a natural progression from dirt bikes to four wheels and a roll cage.”

“Brian and I are a good balance for each other,” said Cuffaro. “Brian brings a lot to the table with his name recognition and racing resume. I bring experience in off-road racing, along with prepping and maintaining trucks.”

K&N is the filter of choice for Metal Mulisha. “I’m pumped on K&N,” said Deegan. “K&N makes the best air filter. We never have problems on the track with K&N.”

Cuffaro and Deegan return to the LOORRS Series at the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Complex July 25-29.
