“It’s been 14 years since I competed weekly at Knoxville,” said Herrera. “It felt great to win and accomplish the goal we set for ourselves.” Herrera teamed up with car owners Larry and Lori Woodward at the beginning of the 2009 season to run the weekly 410 sprint car program at Knoxville.

Herrera had enough points by the final race night of the season to seal the championship after the heat race in the Larry Woodward 2W sprint car with K&N products. “To say Johnny dominated the season would be an understatement,” said Larry Woodward . “It took a lot of hard work and dedication by Johnny and his crew chief Troy Renfro to be consistent at the track.”

Herrera has raced for 25 years. He drove in the World of Outlaws and took Rookie of the Year Honors in the 1986 series. “My biggest victory was the $50,000 to win 1996 King’s Royal at Eldora Speedway,” said Herrera. “It was amazing because my top wing collapsed during the race but we managed to beat everyone else.” Herrera has more than 100 overall wins to his credit and has won at Knoxville on more than ten occasions. He is also a 12-lap record holder at the track.

“I’ve used K&N my entire career,” said Herrera. “K&N filters works well on the track, give me extra filtration and are easy to maintain. Winning and K&N go together perfectly.”

Herrera will next race at Eldora Speedway in Ohio in a World of Outlaws event.

California Rider on the Road in European Motorcycle Union Supermoto Championship Series

Michelle DiSalvo is a long way from her home in Manteca, California. She is on the road for the European Motorcycle Union (UEM) Supermoto Championship Series.

DiSalvo travelled from Belgium to the third round of the series in Latina, Italy. “The trip to Latina was hot and extensive,” said DiSalvo. “The track is located about 60 miles south of Rome on the western coast of Italy. Our large truck was older and limited to speeds of up to 60 mph.” The race team had to travel slowly through the mountains until they faced an obstacle at the Italian border.

“In order to enter Italy, we had to drive through a 12 mile tunnel,” she said. “The border police told us our truck was too old and therefore the emissions were too great to enter the tunnel. Fortunately, the police changed their minds and let us through.” If the team had to go to another crossing, they would not have made the race at the Italian Track II Sagittario in Latina.

DiSalvo and her crew fortunately made it in time for the technical control portion of the series. “It was hot and humid, but I made it to my second practice session in my RMZ 450 Suzuki with K&N products,” she said. “The dirt looked easy but the jumps made me feel like I was hitting a wall.”

DiSalvo rode over bumps and berms through the grass and dirt track. “I went out for my qualifying race and avoided a huge pileup in the first mound of earth,” she said. “I went through a large cloud of dust and debris to finish the course in 17th place.”

The next day riders dealt with the problems and delays a huge thunderstorm brings to a race track. “I went from wet grass to wet dirt and almost missed the first jump,” said DiSalvo. “I did manage to take 2 more seconds off my best lap time.” Currently DiSalvo is 15th overall in the UEM Supermoto championship standings.

DiSalvo's  motorcycles are equipped with K&N air filters, product number YA-2506XD and K&N oil filters, product number KN-207.

Round 4 of the UEM Supermoto Championship Series resumes in Pas de la Casa, Andorra September 19 and 20.

K&N Develops Race Specific Air Filter For The Completely New 2009-2016 Suzuki GSX-R1000 Sportbike

Suzuki’s GSX-R1000 first hit the streets in 2001 and took the world by surprise. Since that time, Suzuki’s flagship GSX-R model has received a number of enhancements. However, for the first time in eight years, the GSX-R1000 is truly all-new. No component was ignored when designing a new GSX-R1000. Most notably, Suzuki gave its liter bike an all new engine, suspension, and ergonomics.

K&N purpose built, race specific air filter SU-1009R for 2009 to 2016 Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycles.
K&N purpose built, race specific air filter SU-1009R for 2009 to 2016 Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycles.
Before the redesign, the GSX-R1000 was already a potent race-ready street machine. Now things are really going to heat up in the 1000cc class. To help the GSX-R1000 further excel on the track, K&N designed a new race specific air filter (SU-1009R) designed to increase performance in 2009 to 2016 Suzuki GSX-R1000 models.

K&N’s line of race specific sportbike air filters are designed for asphalt racing only. Part number SU-1009R is very different from its stock replacement air filter counter part (SU-1009). SU-1009R incorporates two-ply cotton media in a special pleat pattern to be less restrictive, providing extra airflow. As a result K&N racing air filter SU-1009R increases horsepower and acceleration for the racetrack.

K&N air filters are washable and reusable. This air filter does not come pre-oiled and must be oiled prior to installation. Use the included oil pillow pack and follow the oiling instructions. SU-1009R will fit directly inside your OE air box assembly. No cutting or fitting modifications are required to install SU-1009R but fuel management modifications will be necessary to obtain optimum performance.

K&N’s SU-1009R is warranted against defective workmanship for one year after the date of purchase with no mileage limitation. This K&N air filter is designed for asphalt racing only. It is not intended for dirt track, off-road or highway use.

For 2009 to 2016 Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycles used in normal non-racing environments, K&N recommends its four layer OE replacement air filter, part number SU-1009 for excellent engine protection and air flow.

The K&N SU-1009R air filter fits the following Suzuki bikes:

American Matt Waldin wins Drift Mania Canada Championship

Drifter Matt Waldin of West Chester, Pennsylvania

Matt Waldin of West Chester, Pennsylvania has been crowned the Champion of the 2009 Drift Mania Canada Championship (DMCC) after sweeping the series with a podium finish at every round. Matt and his Tuner Icons Nissan 350Z finished the season with two first, two second, and one third place finishes.

On the track, Matt is known for his aggressive, foot-to-the floor driving style. “You have to charge hard,” he advises. “You don't win battles from being the lead car; you win them by being inches off the lead car’s door at eighty miles per hour.”

Parallel to K&N drifters Chris Forsberg and Vaughn Gittin Jr., Matt also began his career at Englishtown Raceway in New Jersey, practicing and competing at grassroot events. He worked his way up the ranks and now holds every North American professional drifting license.

“The key to our successful DMCC season was the reliability of the car,” says Matt. “If the car doesn't perform, we can't drive it to the limits. Being consistent on the track starts with a reliable setup.”

Part of Matt’s reliable setup includes K&N Filters. “Using K&N Filters in the Tuner Icons 350Z is the obvious choice,” he says. “The reliability and consistency of the car starts with the right filter.”

Matt intends to use his winning momentum to compete at Formula Drift Round 7 at Irwindale Speedway. “I plan to use all of the knowledge that I have gained running on banked ovals during the DMCC season,” he says. “At Irwindale, I will be satisfied with making the top sixteen, but the champagne doesn't pop unless you’re on the podium, so you can be sure we will be charging hard for this one.”

Monster Truck Power at Geauga Fair in Ohio and Northwest Missouri State Fair

Seven of the best Monster Trucks in the Northeast gathered for a night full of high octane motorsports thrills at the Geauga Fair in Burton, Ohio, before travelling to Bethany, Missouri for the Northwest Missouri State Fair.

During the wheelie contest the drivers pulled their Monster Trucks high above the car stacks. “I did a textbook wheelie across the first line of cars,” said Vaters. “When I went for my second wheelie I floored the gas in the Stallion and broke the throttle cable. I was out of commission for a while.”

Vaters couldn’t make the racing portion of the event, but Trey Myers drove the Iron Warrior. In the first race, Myers bested Dan Patrick in Sampson by a truck length. Myers also beat Jay Snyder in Screamin’ Demon in the semi-finals, and went on to beat Jim Koehler in Avenger in the finals.

Vaters and his crew completed repairs and made it back out in time for his favorite event, the Monster Freestyle. “I was on a mission to make up lost time in the pits,” said Vaters. “I soared off the cars and van stacks in Black Stallion.”

The next day, Vaters and his team traveled to the Northwest Missouri State Fair in Bethany, Missouri. ‘It was the first time a Monster Truck show performed at this fair so everyone was in for a treat,” said Vaters. “The fans came out in droves and set a record attendance.”

During the first event, the crowd was treated to the sky wheelie competition. “I was able to get the nose of the all Ford Powered K&N Black Stallion up in the air,” said Vaters. “It seemed to be suspended in slow motion and I took the win. I also tore the tailgate off the truck on the line of cars.”

Iron Warrior and Black Stallion next went head-to-head in racing and made it to the finals. “Both trucks came off the line simultaneously when the flag dropped,” said Vaters. “Each truck throttled in the straight-away across the car stacks. We both executed well.” Black Stallion eventually took the win in a very close competition.

Vaters uses K&N air and oil filters on his Monster Trucks. “K&N filters work,” said Vaters. “We push our engines to the limit and are hard on our motors. K&N gives us the protection we need to win competition after competition.”

The Black Stallion Team will next be at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey on September 19.
