Blistering Desert Heat at Primm 300 Tests Damen Jefferies K&N Filters Trophy Truck

Trophy Truck racers battled it out in the blistering desert heat during the 14th Annual SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 near Stateline, Nevada. The No. 22 K&N Filters Trophy Truck challenged 23 other competitors over four 69 mile loops of dry, rocky, silty rugged terrain.

It was 104 degrees when Team Jefferies started their engine. “The temperatures inside the truck engine compartment and drivers cockpit were insane,” said Damen Jefferies. “My right foot got burned and my toes got blistered through my Nomex racing shoes.”

In the first lap, Team Jefferies had one flat tire. The team was also concerned about temperatures under the hood of the trophy truck and stopped at the main pit to try and cool it down.

“We are still learning this truck,” said Jefferies. “The engine can lose power if it runs for long periods of time in this kind of heat. We also wanted to take the time to ensure we weren’t causing any damage to the vehicle and use this opportunity to solve any problems that could pop up at a future race in this kind of heat.”

One of the constants Team Jefferies can rely on are K&N products. The No. 22 K&N Trophy Truck is equipped with a K&N designed air induction system and a K&N performance oil filter. This provides Team Jefferies with the power and protection it needs for racing in extreme conditions. “Our K&N filter is amazing,” said Jefferies. “It stops 100 percent of the dirt and silt from damaging the engine. We can’t even see where we are going through the dust and it manages to filter out the dust and debris while making horsepower. K&N filters continue to attest that they can withstand any environment.”

The second and third lap went well for Team Jefferies. They passed several other trucks that were on the side of the track due to mechanical problems from the heat. “We had the pit crew change the MAP and cam sensors before we went out on our last lap,” said Casey Jefferies, co-rider and lead mechanic of the No. 22 K&N Filters Trophy Truck. “We wanted to make sure we were not missing anything.”

The truck went out for its last lap and ran well for a while. “We started to lose power again at the top of the wash at mile 222,” said Jefferies. “We stopped on the side of the course for about three minutes to let everything cool off. Once we got going again we had full power to the finish line.”

Team Jefferies was happy with its 12th place finish. “We are very happy with this result, the vehicle is new and has a one of a kind transmission that had never raced,” said Jefferies. “The Primm 300 was a huge step in the right direction. We will do more testing and get the truck ready for the Baja 1000.

The next race for the No.22 K&N Trophy Truck will be the 4th annual M.O.R.E. (Mojave Off-Road Enthusiast) Powder Puff Race for the cure. Proceeds and donations from the event will benefit the Cedars Sinai Cancer Research Center for women. Mindy Jefferies will drive and Jenna Jefferies will co-ride.

From there, Damen and Casey Jefferies will race at the SCORE Baja 1000 on November 19th through 22nd on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula.

Jason Meyers is chasing his first World of Outlaws Series title. Meyers is in second place, only 29 points behind leader Donny Schatz. In the 56th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California, Meyers and the Elite Racing Team picked up three wins and seven top five finishes.

Jason Meyers performance at Skagit Speedway gave him a third place finish in the World of Outlaws race. His next event will be at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.

One of the turning points for Meyers in the 2009 season was in a prior race at Skagit Speedway in Burlington, Washington. The end of the season was approaching and he knew he would have to make up ground quickly in the chase for points. “Donny Schatz and his team are very good at what they do,” said Meyers. “Every night counts in the fight for the championship.”

Meyers uses K&N products to keep his motors clean as he closes in on the title. “K&N filters are the best and that is why you will find them in every application within our team,” he said. “We work very hard to make horsepower and K&N allows us to protect our motors under the worst track conditions.”

The Clovis, California native began the race at Skagit by qualifying in the 10th position. Meyers went on to finish in 2nd place and qualified for the Crane Cams Dash. He lined up on the outside of the third row. On the start he charged to the top of turns one and two, but could not find a clear line to pass. He went on to finish in 7th position, which put him inside the fourth row for the A main.

During the intermission, officials went to work on the race track. They tried to widen the groove to permit more passing between competitors. The Elite Racing Team also took advantage of the intermission by working on Meyer’s chassis.

At the drop of the green flag, Meyers charged into 6th position and stayed there for the next ten laps. The track was still very narrow. Several cautions and red flags occurred during the 30 lap event due to some very violent crashes.

Meyers strategy was to finish the race. He steadily worked his way to 3rd position behind leader Joey Saldana and Jason Sides. On the race restart, Meyers pulled side by side with his second place competitor, but could not complete the pass. He came home in 3rd position earning 144 championship points for the evening.

Meyers will next race will be at Eldora Speedway in a World of Outlaws sanctioned event in Rossburg, Ohio on September 25.

At the start of the race Cook was in eighth place. He battled his way up to the front, passing his competitors in lapped traffic. The first caution came out on lap 32. On the restart, Cook took the lead and proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field.

Rain put an end to the first round of the race after 39 laps. Drivers and track officials went to the pit area to wait for the lightening and rain to stop. Ninety wet minutes later, the event was postponed until Monday afternoon.

When the 100 lap race resumed, Cook took his position in first place and went for the win. He managed to stretch out his lead despite several cautions that put a stop to the racing action. After 87 laps, second place runner Earl Pearson made a push for the lead. With only a few laps remaining, drivers once again were forced to stop for the final caution of the night.

In the dash to the finish, Cook never looked back and took his fifth career Lucas Oil Series victory of the season and the biggest paycheck of his career.

“My No.53 MasterSbilt race car has been great all season,” said Cook. “Our K&N filters protect our engine from the flying mud and debris. K&N also gives us additional horsepower and filtration. I’ve used K&N for a decade and would not use anything else on the race track or on my personal vehicles.”

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series returns to action on Friday and Saturday September 15 and 26 at Brownstown Speedway in Indiana. The 30th Annual Jackson 100 will pay $20,000 to win.

Rock Turned Missile Ends Rally Race for Mitsubishi Evo X Near Quebec, Canada

Driver Andrew Comrie-Picard had a tough time at Rallye Defi Ste-Agathe in Round 4 of the Canadian Rally Championship Series near Montpellier, Quebec. Comrie-Picard and co-driver Robbie Durant were forced to abandon the contest at the mid-point in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

“We were running a strong third overall in the rally when a rock thrown up in the right wheel well damaged the oil cooler,” said Comrie-Picard. “We stopped between stages, re-routed the lines to delete the oil cooler, drained the oil from a spectator vehicle and transferred the oil into the rally car.”

Unfortunately, the spark of roadside ingenuity took too long. Comrie-Picard and Durant were just over the thirty minute time limit and were not allowed to continue the race. Subaru Rally Team Canada competitor Patrick Richard also stopped on the same leg of the race with gearbox damage. Richard was leading the event until he was sidelined.

“It was very frustrating,” said Comrie-Picard. “We would have probably finished second and could have used the championship points. But you have to have the endurance to push on.”

There are still two events left in the Canadian Championship Series that will allow Team ACP to pull back up in the standings. The Canadian Rally Championship consists of six events from February through November. The next event on the Canadian Rally Championship calendar is the Pacific Forest Rally in Merritt, British Columbia, October 2-3.

Comrie-Picard also remains a top contender in the North American Rally Championship Series and is on the way to Colorado for Round 8. Once there, he will drive his NOS Energy Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX.

He is currently in fourth place, only two points behind Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block. “It’s a tight battle, but I’m confident I can move up,” said Comrie-Picard. “There’s going to be some great racing in the final two rounds. We’re playing catch-up to the other guys, but we’re going to make every round count this season and claw our way back up the ranks.”

Rally America allows two event drops in the season, counting seven of nine rallies toward the championship. “Some teams, like the factory-backed Subaru Rally Team USA, run all nine events,” said Comrie-Picard. “We contested seven rounds in 2009, so every rally counts for our team’s points standings.”

Team ACP Rally uses K&N filters on his vehicles. “I’ve used K&N since I began rally racing more than a decade ago,” said Comrie-Picard. “We compete under tough conditions, with dust, mud and water splashes. We do the most extreme things we can do in a car and K&N is the perfect formula for our turbo charged motors. There is no compromise with K&N.”

Rally car racing is considered the extreme sport of automobile racing and is often described as real cars, real roads and real fast. This all season motorsport tests drivers and their modified vehicles to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over courses that cover hundreds of miles of gravel, dirt or snow covered roads. Fans are allowed to witness the action up close in the service areas or catch all the action from designated spectator points located at the best spots along the route.

Rally America Round 8 resumes September 19 and 20 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

USAC Ford Focus Midget Series Win at Kings Speedway for K&N Sponsored Racer

Kings Speedway in Hanford, California hosted a race in the USAC Ford Focus Midget Series. The Swanson Motorsports Team rolled into the central valley ready to compete on the 3/8 banked clay oval track.

K&N sponsored driver Cody Swanson knew he had to be prepared. “I was a little bummed about running on the big track,” said Swanson. “I prefer the tight racing on a smaller track. I talked to my driving coach about it and received some last minute advice.”

The advice worked because Swanson finished 2nd in the heat race and won the 25 lap feature.

Swanson started in the 5th position for the heat. “It was a clean race with no real drama,” he said. “I drove to a 2nd place finish in my Goodwine Glass, K&N Filters, Lucas Oil No. 71.”

In the feature race, Swanson started in 5th position. He took the lead coming out of the turn before the first lap was finished. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” said Swanson. “It was as if they all knew I was coming and just moved out of my way. It must have been because of the additional horsepower from my K&N filters.” In the end Swanson took the checkered flag with a seven car lead.

“It was awesome,” said Swanson. “I have so many people to thank for helping me get here. K&N has provided the air filters, oil filters and breather filters for me since my early days of kart racing. The Kings Speedway track was very dry and dusty. K&N protected my engine and kept all of the dust and dirt out. I would not set a tire on a race track without my K&N filters protecting my engine.”

The Swanson Motorsports team will head back to Kings Speedway on October 3rd for the next USAC Ford Focus race.
