Mike Mans Notches a Wire-to-Wire Victory in Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race at BIR

The wire-to-wire win at Brainerd International Raceway had been a long time coming for the hard working Mans Racing team and it was well deserved.
Mans Racing traveled to Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) for round two of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and they left with a dominating win. Mike Mans qualified number one with a 9.35 second run, .949 seconds under the SS/CS National Index, then battled through five rounds of eliminations before posting a perfect .000 reaction time in the final.

Mike Mans qualified in first place, weeded through five rounds of eliminations, then posted a perfect .000 reaction time in Sunday's final.

"We were having some issues with our reaction times being inconsistent and actually too fast," explained Mans. "So after testing on Thursday we decided to change a few things inside the transmission as well as my transbrake button in the car. It made all the difference in the world, I was able to get the car in a window of .020 lights for eliminations and stay where I wanted to be."

Mans said that this win had been a long time coming for the team. They came up to BIR on Thursday and tested all day, and found a few changes that needed to be made and it paid off for them. The biggest struggle had been getting their reaction times in a good window. Mans’ final run proved yet again that luck favors the prepared.

"My .000 reaction time in the final was definitely not intentional, it was just a bit of unbelievable luck that it didn't turn red when I let go," remarked Mans.

"The car actually picked the tires out of the beams instead of using the rollout of the tire, so my light picked up from the .015 I was set for. It was the best scenario from an error in the car I've had in a long time. Getting back on top of the qualifying sheet was a testament to the power my dad Randy can make; it was a real morale booster heading into that final on Sunday," added Mans.

"Our car was flawless and incredibly consistent and dial-able all weekend. It seems to be rare to have a car that makes you so confident, but this weekend everything seemed to fall into place for us."

Every part in the Mans Racing Pontiac Firebird is equally demanding of quality and performance, that’s why they depend on the K&N oil filter (PN: HP-3002), K&N Stubstack (PN: 85-0200), as well as a custom K&N high performance air filter to keep their motors at peak power and consistency.

Todd Bertrand Earns NEMA Lites Series Victory at Monadnock Speedway

Todd Bertrand scores his first 2010 feature victory at Monadnock Speedway.
Todd Bertrand scores his first 2010 feature victory at Monadnock Speedway.
NASCAR sanctioned Monadnock Speedway, located in Winchester, New Hampshire hosted a huge field of North Eastern Midget Association (NEMA) Lite Series racers last Saturday. After the smoke settled on the quarter-mile, high-banked, asphalt oval, Todd Bertrand had the checkered flag. Racing the Tim Bertrand/K&N number 48 car, Todd worked from his fifteenth place starting position to score his first feature victory of the season.
Monadnock Speedway is a small, tight track, but Todd was able to run up high, where no one else was running.

"It feels great to have knocked down our first win of the year remarked Todd. "We came from tenth and led most of the first race back in March, at Waterford Speedbowl, but we faded at the end and finished second. We worked really hard on the car over the two month break, spent time both on the chassis and on the dyno with the engine. It all paid off. The car was really hooked up on the outside. Monadnock is a small, tight track, but I was able to run up high, where no one else was running. That helped us to get to the front."

"The cautions kept-coming tonight," said Bertrand in victory lane. "I took my time in this one. With two months off, some of the drivers were a bit anxious and got into each other, causing a number of wrecks. Also, the track is small and racy, so that always causes some excitement, and yellow flags as well. I adjusted our DRI-BAR setup to keep the car consistent. It also helped us that the track was in such good shape. The last lap was a little tough; I saw those two cars get-together, saw the smoke, and was lucky to get through-it."

"My Dad and I are so proud of Todd" commented Tim Bertrand. "I captured my first win as a car owner at Monadnock in 2009, with Randy Cabral. After saying a number of times I thought we would never win there due to the fact that it is a very tricky track, and because we had some bad luck there in the past. It is even more exciting that Todd captured a win at Monadnock, as my Father owned a Modified Tour car that won back in the 1970's at this track, and he never thought he would win a race at the same track, 30 years later, with his son."

"We would not be able to be where we are if it were not for our support from K&N," added Tim. We have a great relationship and promote K&N everywhere we go. We use the K&N custom made filter for the Ford Focus midget and the HP-1002 oil filter. Our engine has over 100 races on it without being taken apart, and without failure thanks to the K&N filter."

The NEMA Lites Series races next at Massachusetts' Seekonk Speedway.

K&N's Mike Edwards Garners Sixth NHRA Pro Stock Win for 2010 at Route 66 Raceway

One would think that after obtaining numerous polls and already racking up five NHRA Pro Stock victories during the first nine events on the 2010 tour, when a small break in the action would come along a team would take a moment to rest.

Not the case for Mike Edwards Motorsports. The very next day after grabbing the win during the NHRA event in Topeka, Kansas, the entire team was back out on the track with Edwards making laps in his Penhall/K&N/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP.

For a team in hopes of maintaining their NHRA Pro Stock Champion status, they know like many others, there can never be enough testing.

"We test in all kinds of weather conditions and it just helps to add information to your notes," explains Edwards. "We have lots of computer data from the car and we use the same weather station that most other teams use. The Computech setup and it's pretty accurate as it can give you up-to-date information every fifteen seconds."

"You have two choices in Pro Stock, you can stop working and it will be only a matter of a couple races and the Pro Stock field will pass you by," he added. "This is easily the most competitive class in motorsports and some of the best minds are working countless hours to get better. The second choice is to try a work harder than everyone else and stay on top. We have elected to follow the second path."

The NHRA professional teams had a weekend off following the Topeka event before rolling into Joliet, Illinois for the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals, where Edwards between event testing paid dividends back to the team.

The Joliet event was yet another on the 2010 NHRA tour that was plagued by weather, even numerous tornado warnings a little too close for comfort. Even with all the weather delays, professional qualifying for the Route 66 Nationals was only shortened by one session.

Edwards' 6.629 E.T. during qualifying session two, would be all that he needed to grab and hang on to the number one spot all while adding to his points lead for the coveted K&N Horsepower Challenge. The highly sought after crown for the 2010 Challenge Championship will be contested for in just a few short weeks during the Norwalk, Ohio NHRA event.

Air conditions changed drastically over the course of the event keeping teams on their toes, by going from thick-sultry air during the first sessions to almost the complete opposite for race day on Sunday.

"The weather was a lot better for the first two rounds on Sunday and then it was even better for the second two rounds after the long-long rainouts in the middle of everything," noted Edwards.

Edwards started off race day by laying down the quickest Pro Stock pass of the weekend to that point, a 6.605 in his winning effort over the number sixteen qualifier, Rich Stevens in round one.

That would pair him up with multi-time champ Greg Anderson, where Edwards continued to tweak the E.T. in his Penhall/K&N/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP by posting a 6.603 over Anderson's best effort of the event, a 6.634.

Edwards and the other three remaining Pro Stock competitors would have plenty of time to think about their upcoming semi-final rounds, as Mother Nature dumped on the facility just outside of Chicago shortly after 3p.m.

As if "she" was listening for the call to the lanes, shortly after 5p.m. when the track was ready and professional rounds were to resume, yet another torrential downpour struck the event, this time with enough winds to even blow away several of the advertising inflatables.

When the rain finally ceased and the officials finalized track prep, for what must have seemed like the umpteenth time during the event, it was time for some unusual night competition.

Edwards notes that the semi-final round was the one where a little luck might have come into play from him. "We really felt like we got away with the win against Rodger (Brogdon). We were not at our best and we were real fortunate to win that one I thought."

His final round opponent would be Jason Line and with identical (6.601) semi-final E.T.'s, it would be Line with lane choice due to his faster MPH.

"It was dark by the time we ran the final and I will say I'm not a fan of running in the dark," commented Edwards. "These cars are pretty hard to see out of because even though the track is lit very well, all those lights actually cause quite a glare though the windshields on our Pro Stock cars going down track."

While neither Line nor Edwards had been stellar in the reaction time department throughout earlier rounds, they certainly seemed to have saved them all up for when it truly counted, both posting "double-oh" lights and were only .001 apart when they left the starting line. It was Line with the ever-so-slight advantage.

And even though Line managed to just nudge into the 6.50's and post his quickest pass of the weekend, Edwards still managed to nip him at the stripe by a mere four thousandths of a second, giving the fans who stuck it out one very exciting final round.

His ongoing testing paying off, Edwards left the event with his sixth event championship for 2010 in seven final rounds and claimed his twenty-sixth NHRA Pro Stock win.

Competition for Edwards and his Penhall/K&N/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP moves next to the 41st annual NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, Englishtown, New Jersey June 11-13, 2010.

Baehr Brothers Face Off in Final Round at Pittsburgh Raceway Park

Bracket racers rely on good reaction times and honest predictions for how fast they feel their cars can travel a quarter of a mile.
Bracket racers rely on good reaction times and honest predictions for how fast they feel their cars can travel a quarter of a mile.
Drag racers in Northern Ohio were chomping-at-the-bit - too much rain made for too little racing. Things are looking up though and they're racing now. Last Sunday afternoon, in the final round of Bracket Racing at Pittsburgh Raceway Park, the guaranteed bet was that Baehr Racing would take home the five-thousand dollar check. A sure thing because it was a brother against brother affair.
This was the second time the Baehr brothers have met in a final, and this time Rick got the win over Brian, evening the score.
This was the second time the Baehr brothers have met in a final, and this time Rick got the win over Brian, evening the score.

"There was a little bit of pressure running Brian in the finals" admitted Rick Baehr. "I knew how well Brian was driving all day and how good his car was leading up to the finals. Brian and I had run once before, also in the finals, but that was eleven years ago when we were still both in high school. Brian smacked me around with a double '0' light and was close to his dial-in where he went on to win the High School Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park. This time though I narrowly escaped to even up the score."
The final round of Bracket Racing at Pittsburgh Raceway Park delivered a five-thousand dollar payoff to Baehr Brothers Racing.

"Brian and I met up for all the marbles. Brian turned it -.0005 red dead on .007. In the other lane I was .023 dead on 2 for the win. What an unbelievable feeling that was to race off with my younger brother in the finals of such a great paying race. Then on Monday he got a .009 package dropped on him third round. I got beat fourth round, when I was .019 under .012, taking a .005 stripe. All-in-all not too bad of a start to the year for the Baehr brothers," remarked Rick.

For those unfamiliar with drag racing speak, Rick will now translate. "In Bracket Racing, we rely on good reaction times and honest predictions for how fast we feel our cars can travel a quarter of a mile. In this style of racing you can actually lose a race by getting to the finish line first and going faster than you had predicted."

"In the attempt to get to the finish line first, but take the smallest amount time possible, we may sometimes make the mistake of 'giving back the stripe,' or letting the opponent cross in front of you while tightening up the finish line margin. On the flip side, we may also get to the finish line first by taking 'too much stripe' and be eliminated from competition by going faster than we predicted."

The Baehr brothers say they completely rely on K&N products each and every time they get into an automobile. They run K&N oil and air filters in their racecars and daily drivers.

"We also rely on K&N to get us to the track with a Cold Air Intake system in our car hauler, "adds Rick. "K&N is a brand and company we believe in and we are grateful to be part of the K&N team."

Brian and Rick plan on competing for a local track championship at Summit Motorsports Park, located half way between Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, in PRO/No Box class.

"We also plan to hit a dozen or so big dollar races where we will be racing for purses between $2500 and $20,000," says Rick. "I will be competing in a handful of NHRA Full Throttle National Events in Stock and Super Stock Eliminators along with a few NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional Races as well."

Adds Rick, "Baehr Racing really would like to thank K&N for their superior products and support – we rely on them to win races and for mile after mile of reliable transportation to and from the racetracks."
