Sergio Pena won the first race of his NASCAR K&N Pro Serie East career at South Boston Speedway in Virginia on Sunday, pulling away in the last 10 laps and taking advantage of a late-race crash that took out leader Brett Moffitt.

Pena, a NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver for Revolution Racing, burst on to the K&N Pro Series scene in 2010 when he won the pole and was the runner-up to Joey Logano in the Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

But his first full season in the K&N Pro Series East was far from stellar. He recorded only three top-10 finishes in 12 races and finished 12th in the final East Series standings. His best finish in 2010 was a sixth-place in the season opener at Greenville Pickens Speedway in South Carolina.

"This feeling is unbelievable," Pena said. "The Showdown was one feeling, but to win a race actually is a completely different deal."

Pena took the lead in the race at South Boston on lap 141, passing Moffitt who was out front by nearly three seconds before tangling with lapped traffic. Moffitt crashed with Michael Cherry with 10 laps to go in the race.

"I was riding there third for a while," Pena said. "Brett Moffit, he checked out. He was definitely the car to beat. We were going through some lapped traffic. I'm not exactly sure what happened. I was a little bit too far behind. I think he got in to the back of someone.

Unfortunately for him, he couldn't finish the race because he definitely had the car to beat. Luckily I was there to pounce on it and take away the win. Unfortunate for Brett. He's a great kid."

On the ensuing restart, Pena took the lead and held off Matt DiBenedetto, who finished second, and Max Gresham in third.

"We had a chance there. We just got a little too loose there in the last couple of laps," Gresham said. "Sergio's a great kid and we're good friends. I don't want to race him dirty and I'm happy for him."

Moffitt was in search of his third K&N Pro Series East win in a row. He won the season opener at Greenville Pickens Speedway and the 2010 season finale at Dover Inernational Speedway in Delaware. He ended up in 24th after crashing.

Darrell Wallace Jr. won the pole and led a race-high 73 laps. Moffitt passed Wallace for the lead on lap 74 and was out front for the next 67 laps. Wallace ended up in sixth place.

Coleman Pressley was fourth followed by Ryan Gifford in fifth. It was Pressley's second top-five finish in as many races.

Pena leads the K&N Pro Series East standings after two races. He is one point ahead of Pressley. DiBenedetto is third in the East Series standings, six points behind Pena.

The next K&N Pro Series East race is at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia on April 28.

Bobby Santos Leads Flag-to-Flag to Win Neibel Classic at Anderson Speedway

Bobby Santos dominating win at the Neibel Classic saw him lead every lap and win with a 1.13 second lead.
The last occasion we spoke with K&N sponsored Bobby Santos III he was winning his first ever NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Championship, this time we talked about winning the Neibel Classic at Anderson Speedway in Mooresville, North Carolina.
The 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion says he thoroughly enjoys the power and the throttle control aspect of the racing Sprint Cars.
The 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion says he thoroughly enjoys the power and the throttle control aspect of the racing Sprint Cars.

Santos told K&N Race News, "I love racing Sprint Cars, the power and the throttle control aspect of the racing to me is a lot of fun. I think we had such a great race because the car was working really well. We had a good handle on the chassis, and we've been so close at Anderson, so we were due for a win there."

The Heinke-Baldwin Racing (HBR) development, Franklin, Massachusetts, native competed in the Gary Neibel Classic at Anderson Speedway in his family-owned sprint car. Santos started on the pole in the No. 98 K&N Santos Motorsports Beast Chevrolet, and led every lap of the 50-lap feature. Santos, who plans to run the entire USAC National Pavement Sprint Car Series schedule in 2011, currently sits second in the point standings.

"Our 2011 schedule is very busy, but I love that," Santos said. "It keeps me thinking about racing all the time. It feels really good to start the season off with a win and that can carry you a long way. But we expect to win more and hopefully it rolls into more wins for us."

Santos posted the sixth fastest qualifying time in the Neibel Classic. "Anderson is a tough track to pass, so I think qualifying is the most important part," explained Santos. "We qualified sixth, which made our weekend much easier." Saving his tires for the feature event, Santos finished sixth in his heat race. Then, with the inversion, the 25-year-old racer started the 50-lap feature from the pole.

During the first 30 laps, Santos was pushed hard for the lead, but the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion held them off. A restart on lap 30 allowed Santos to get a good jump on the field, and he got an even bigger lead in another restart with only ten laps to go. Santos, who finished third in his last two events, took the checkers with a 1.13 second lead this time.

"We started on the pole and lead every lap," said Santos. "It was pretty uneventful, except there was a lot of lapped traffic, which made it exciting. I got through lapped traffic well. By the end of the race, we kind of got away from the other cars, so that made it better than just starting on the pole and hanging on. We've always been really fast at Anderson, but I always end up crashing," he continued. "It felt good to actually get the win."

Santos has two major goals for 2011, to win the Whelen Modified Tour Championship again, and the USAC Pavement Sprint Car Championship. He adds, "But it's the same as every year, as we will try to win as many races as possible."

Santos says he's also looking ahead to racing some winged Sprint Car races for Don Wilshe this year. "I've never driven a winged Sprint before, so I'm looking forward to the experience, and to working with Don," he says.

Santos will return to racing with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut April 29 - May 1, for the 40th Annual Spring Sizzler. He will then jump back into the No. 98 K&N Santos Motorsports Beast Chevrolet for the second USAC National Pavement Sprint Car Series event of the season at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Thursday, May 12th.

K&N's G35 Project Wins at Firebird and Increases Championship Points Lead

One of the challenges for Dave Martis with the G35 is finding ways to put the cars awesome power on the track, but Martis says he very pleased with the progress so far.
One of the challenges for Dave Martis with the G35 is finding ways to put the cars awesome power on the track, but Martis says he very pleased with the progress so far.
A few klicks south of Phoenix, Arizona, is where you'll find Firebird International Raceway, the site of the highly anticipated second round of the Pro Track Challenge Series. The short 1.6 mile road course has been described as a somewhat funky track configuration, as it's a dragstrip connected by turns on either end, picture a spoon with finger grips.
With a second round class win at Firebird Raceway, the K&N Motorsports Infiniti G35 now has a good lead in the Redline Pro Track Challenge Series points championship.
With a second round class win at Firebird Raceway, the K&N Motorsports Infiniti G35 now has a good lead in the Redline Pro Track Challenge Series points championship.

"The course is tight through the twisty sections so you need a setup to be able to throw the car around, and this section doesn't require ultimate power," explained Dave Martis, the Research and Development manager overseeing the K&N Motorsports Infiniti G35 development. "But then you come screaming onto the dragstrip, which has been used for years and the traction properties are totally different, so the car wants to do crazy stuff. Once you get it fairly straight, you mat the throttle and rocket down to the end of the dragstrip, then brake hard to get it whoa'd down for the first turn."

The stage was set for ideal day of practice on Friday, although Mother Nature had other plans. Racers and teams awoke to steady rain that made for a very soggy morning and a very slippery track. "It rained all day Friday and up to about 1pm on Saturday," said Martis. "The track dried enough by about 2:30 Saturday to allow us to lay down some laps with the G. The car was quick, but the setup wasn't ideal for the track configuration. We made adjustments Saturday to allow Paul (Brown) to get around the track quicker and the RTLA officials again asked me to run the car against the Circuit Battle big guns for the TV show."

In stark contrast Sunday was a beautiful day. The air was cool and the G was laying down some serious power. Suspension changes were made the car was clicking off lap times in the high 1:03 range on worn Hoosier tires (track record was 1:04). Overall the G35 with Brown at the controls came away with a first place in the Time Attack, with a lap of 1:02.835, securing another first place finish in class. The K&N Motorsports Infiniti G35 now has a solid lead for a championship title.

We made some changes to the suspension to make the overall platform of the car more stable through the turns," continued Martis. "These changes allowed the car to transition faster with more control. We also switched to a different type of differential in an effort to get the car to drive off the corner with less wheel spin. The new differential really helped in this area. The car has so much power it easily breaks the tires loose when you mat the throttle. Now it hooks up much better."

"For the Circuit Battle TV show we bolted on a fresh set of Hoosiers and started at the back of the pack because we gave up the qualifying race to run the Time Attack event. The sticker tires gave us much needed grip and Paul drove it hard to come from the back to fourth in the Super Session race."

The car turned scorching lap times and laid down a 1:02.393 in the race, second only to Lou Gigliotti in his ALMS Corvette, who bested the G by less than a heartbeat at 0.053 seconds, with a lap of 1:02.340. "For the two lap shoot out, we made it to the semi final round, and got beat by Lou's Corvette, but Paul was just mere inches off his bumper at the finish," adds Martis.

In examining the areas in which the G35 can still improve Martis says, "Rear grip is an area where we still need to make improvements. A key component in any road race car is for the driver to be able to get on the gas early before the completion of a turn to increase the car's speed down the straight sections of the track. This equates to the fastest lap times. We are still working on ways to get the power the car makes to the ground. We are making progress, and make changes after each event, and we will get there. It is all part of the development process when you build a race car."

As the weather becomes hotter, managing the heat will also become a factor. "We haven't had a problem so far this year and didn't last year either. But we are running the car much harder this season, and also pulling double duty so to speak (we race in both Pro-Time Attack and Circuit Battles each weekend). As the summer temperatures go up everything will get heat soaked and that might take its toll on parts. We've done a good job in ventilating the car, and have coolers where needed, but we need to be prepared, and so we have spare parts on hand in case of heat related failures."

Round three of the Redline Pro Track Challenge Series will be at AAA Speedway in Fontana, California, on the weekend of May 28 and 29.
