Sometimes childhood dreams do come true. For Joe Sylvester, they came true at the Monster Jam World Finals℠ in Las Vegas in March.

Sylvester and his Bad Habit monster truck shocked the racing community on his way to a win in the Young Guns Shootout, garnering his small-town Ohio team a spot in the World Finals main event and a showdown with the most harrowing monster truck of them all, Grave Digger.

“Winning the Young Guns Shootout was definitely the highlight of my career,” said Sylvester, a former dirt bike racer. “It ranks right up there with my world record jump back in 2010. My team prepared tremendous amount with our sights set on winning in Vegas and it was very gratifying to take home the trophy.”

Sylvester and his team couldn’t celebrate too much in Sin City, as they had to turn around and be prepared for a full day of racing and freestyle on Saturday night. While the truck and driver were both up to the task, Grave Digger driver Dennis Anderson did what he has done to so many others in his illustrious career: claim another victim.

“This was my first time against Dennis in seven years of monster truck racing,” Sylvester said. “I’ve raced against all of the other Digger drivers, but never Dennis. It was a close race for sure.”

While Sylvester put in a solid performance in freestyle, the team came up just short there as well. Still, for a team working on such a tight budget, Sylvester was all smiles.

“We have a very limited budget and a part-time crew,” Sylvester said. “It takes my focus in more directions than just driving because I also drive the transporter, wrench on the truck, run the business and pay the bills. It is definitely challenging to compete against trucks with an unlimited budget and a dedicated driver, but hey, we did it.

“The notoriety has been great for my sponsors.”

Sylvester was already working on a busy summer schedule working the independent tour and local shows, one of which he is promoting. But those aren’t the only goals Sylvester has this year.

“The show I am promoting at the Canfield Fairgrounds on June 29th is taking a lot of my time right now, but I’m also planning another world record jump. I also want to break in to the scene of short course off road racing in the Pro Light class. We are currently seeking partnerships to support us in entering the rapidly growing sport.”

Sylvester is thankful to have some time back for himself after ending the busy Monster Jam® schedule.

“I get back on my normal training routine and just keep moving forward with my latest projects. 2013 has been a great year so far and it has only really just begun.”

K&N 57S-4000 Performance System for Multiple Ford, Volvo and Mazda Models

K&N has developed the 57S-4000 performance airbox system for multiple year Ford C-Max, Ford C-Max II, Ford Focus, Ford Focus II, Ford Focus III, Ford Grand C-Max, Ford Kuga, Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Volvo C30, Volvo C70 II, Volvo S40 II, Volvo V40, Volvo V40 II, Volvo V50, Volvo V70, Volvo V70 III models found in Europe and around the globe, the complete list of vehicles can be found below. This air intake setup is fully compliant with the latest TUV emissions and sound regulations.

The 57S-4000 increases horsepower and acceleration by reducing air flow restriction caused by the original factory design. Typical gains on a 4 cylinder vehicle range between 4 and 7 horsepower. This very simple installation replaces the factory air filter and lid with K&N's high-flow, washable and reusable performance air filter and lid. The K&N performance lid is injection molded for extra strength, consistency and durability. It is designed to be easily removed for access to the round tapered washable and reusable K&N performance air filter. The air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before servicing is needed depending on driving conditions.

This installation can be performed very quickly with only a screwdriver. This 57S performance airbox uses factory holes and the OE air box base, making this a quick and easy bolt-on upgrade. In addition, the 57S-4000 system comes with the air filter end cap. The end cap can cover the top opening. This opening contains an inverted air filter for more surface area and more air flow. For countries which have TUV regulations the end cap must be used. Combine the high flow performance air filter, performance lid and easy installation together and you will have a power adding, TUV compliant, high-flow intake system that will last for the life of your vehicle.

Multiple language instructions are included with each kit. The easy to assemble 57S-4000 kit can be installed very quickly and it comes with the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty. Use the K&N application search to find all K&N products for your ATV, motorcycle, or vehicle then use the K&N dealer search to find a K&N dealer near you.

2011 and 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD and 2011 and 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD 6.0 liter gas engines are some of the more powerful available on the market today. Adequate airflow is the key to the performance of these large engines. On the flip side of the coin, every driver knows how important filtration is to a vehicle's operation and engine longevity. To balance high airflow and high filtration efficiency, K&N has developed the 77-3076KTK performance air intake system for 2011 and 2012 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks with 6.0 liter engines.

Built for performance and show, the K&N 77-3076KTK High-Flow Performance Air Intake is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube induction system designed to fit easily into 2011, 2012 and 2013 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado 2500 and 3500 6.0 liter models. This air intake system comes with a K&N high flow air filter, a custom designed heat shield and lid to help keep engine heat away and all the necessary components needed for installation. The system has fittings for the crankcase breather hose and a mass air sensor adapter custom designed to perform with the factory's electronics. On top of utilizing the highest quality, vehicle-specific components, the 77-3076KTK is also backed by K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty, giving owners the peace of mind to know that their investment is safe.

K&N air intake systems are a simple bolt-on installation that replaces the vehicle's stock restrictive factory air filter and air intake setup. The 77-3076KTK is also designed to dramatically reduce intake restriction while it straightens air flow. This allows your vehicle's engine to inhale a larger amount of air than the OEM air filter assembly. Less restriction means more usable horsepower, torque and acceleration throughout the engine's RPM range. When dyno tested, the air intake system showed an estimated performance increase of 10 horsepower at 5033rpm and 10 lb-ft of torque at 4736rpm on a 2012 Chevrolet 2500HD pickup with a 6.0 liter V8 engine. The air intake system also allows for an increase in engine sound offering a deeper throatier roar when you step on the gas.

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” echoes the John Lennon lyrics. The musical reference alludes to the certainty that we really, ever, only have the slightest rein on our own destinies. Sometimes we may be looking to zig, but if life determines that we zag, the best we can do is to hang on and make course adjustments.

Since his days as a kid racing karts, Lewis has been on a clear path with his motorsports destiny. For the past couple of years he’s been living in Italy and competing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, it’s the farm league for the big show, Formula 1. The 22-year-old has been making it look easy, living away from home, shouldering the constant weight of big-time sponsorship expectations, and competing against some of the most talented young racers in the world. Lately though Lewis has had to make some of his own course adjustment, on and off the track, but demonstrating the heart of a champion in route to greatness, he’s found his line and he’s getting back up to full speed.

You joined the kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport team only a week before the second race of the season; does that mean you sat out round 1?
"Yes, I joined the team literally a week before the Silverstone Round 2 FIA Formula 3 European Championship weekend. It is really a great moment for me in my career to now be associated with such a strong team as kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport. Team Boss, Peter Mücke, has organized a great group of people to produce fast race cars over the years and I am honored to represent his team at the races.”

There has to be a back-story to you changing teams so abruptly?
“There is definitely a back story to this change, but I must say that it is nothing but a positive one. The winter season from November 2012, to the very end of March 2013, was very long and trying for me as a race driver. Due to some political complications with my old team (Prema) I was unable to drive for them in 2013. Prema and I left on a good/professional note, so there is no animosity there. Prema has done good things for my career and I wish them a successful 2013.”

“Anyway, my father (who is sort of a manager for me) and myself found out we wouldn’t be racing with them pretty late into the offseason, around late December. In addition to that, there were some pretty intense complications in my personal family life that I had to tend to, which made things extremely complicated. These past winter months were the most difficult times I had ever faced in my life. First, I didn't know if I would race at all this 2013 season, and second I had to face and deal with all the political nonsense of a family divorce. However, as crazy as it sounds, my father and I remained resilient and determined to continue racing in Europe for 2013.”

“So as January-February-March 2013 played out, there were many discussions with high level teams in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. I must thank every team for their time and desire to have me race for them. In the end, as things got down to the wire, the strong kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport team and Mercedes-Benz called us and presented a contract that was extremely positive.”

“The team needed a fast driver to replace their lead No. 5 car, as that driver had been called up to DTM by Mercedes-Benz. So, unfortunately I was not driving at the first Monza Round1 FIA Formula 3 European Championship weekend, but being physically present at the Monza race was extremely beneficial.”

“kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport saw that I was available to drive (as I was in the paddock speaking with potential teams) and they said that I could start immediately with them for Round 2 at Silverstone. This was a sort of dream come true as kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport is a prestigious team.”

“I must really thank kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport and Mercedes-Benz for this opportunity, and I look forward to being competitive, winning races, and standing on the podium for 2013. This winter has made me stronger than ever as a person, as dealing with all of that adversity has given me valuable tools that I can use for the rest of my life. Every time I get in the car and drive, I enjoy it to the max and I really give my best effort because it's my passion and what I live for everyday."

Based on how you competed at Silverstone, is it reasonable to assume that your new team is a better fit with how you drive and race?
"Absolutely yes! I feel right at home in the No.5 Mercedes-Benz powered Dallara Formula 3 car. My mechanics, engineer (Peter Flückiger), and all of the team are very professional and give their best effort all the time. They want to win just as bad as I do, so we work together extremely well to achieve that goal. After being with kfzteile Mücke Motorsport for a little over a week, I can see that the team is extremely passionate about racing, that each member of the team enjoys working together, and that the desire to win is there.”

You had some very positive sessions at Silverstone, what’s your take on the weekend now that you’ve had some time to reflect?
"It was definitely a good start to the weekend being P3 in Free Practice under the rain. I was P1 for most of the end parts of the session, and it was a great feeling to get back in the car. Qualifying in the dry did not go so well (in terms of a result), as the lack of dry seat time hurt me the most. It just took another few laps to get going, but there weren't "another few laps" to use really. So I just put in my best effort for what I had in Qually, and my engineer and I just looked towards the races to get mileage and develop our working relationship.”

“All three races were quite flawless in terms of driving: amazing starts, many great overtakes, and good/solid finishes. In Race 1 I started P20 and finished P13. In Race 2 I started P18 and finished P11. In Race 3 I started P13, was running in P11 at the end of the first lap when another driver crashed into the back of my car (sending me off the race track) in the Maggots-Becketts-Chapel complex. Aside from being crashed out of Race 3 from another driver, and the strange Qually, my pace and lap-by-lap consistency was quite strong."

With two rounds down, what goals do you look for from round 3 and for this season overall?
"I would like to Qualify in the top 10. I feel I can do an even better result, but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. Like my engineer Peter Flückiger always tells me, 'Just do what the car can give you and don't invent anything crazy. Just drive and be strong lap by lap.' Hockenheim is a nice track and I know my kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport guys will give me a great car and their best effort for that event.”

Ben Kennedy won the first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race of his career at Five Flags Speedway in Florida with two newcomers hot on his bumper.

Kennedy won the pole and led from start to finish in the NAPA Auto Parts 150, the third race in the K&N Pro Series East schedule. Rookie Gray Gaulding, a 15-year-old from South Carolina, was second. John Van Doorn, a 25-year from Michigan making his first K&N Pro Series East start, was third.

Kennedy, the great grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., won his first NASCAR race in the Euro-Racecar Series in Tours, France, last year. His win at Five Flags Speedway was his first in the United States. Kennedy’s previous best finish in the K&N Pro Series East was third.

“I didn’t know we would be that strong,” said Kennedy, driver of the No. 96 Ben Kennedy Racing Chevrolet. “We saved our tires as much as we could on the long runs. I think Gray had something for me that last restart there. I gave 110 percent those last three laps. It’s just something really cool and I’m speechless tonight.”

Duke Whiseant spun out on lap 136 and bunched up the field for the last restart of the race. Kennedy was able to stay ahead of Gaulding over the last 14 laps of the race. “We’ve been working on our restarts,” Kennedy said. “That’s been one of the things I’ve been trying to focus on lately. That’s been hurting is in the past. We really focused on it the other day when we came out here and tested. It definitely paid off on those restarts.”

Cale Conley spun out in turn four of the last lap of the race, but it didn’t result in a caution. Gaulding said he wanted one more chance to try to pass Kennedy on a restart. “It felt just like the waiting game,” Gaulding said. “At the end of the day, I kinda wished it was a green-white-checkered. As soon as (Kennedy) get on a five, six-lap run, he’s already taken off. It worked out really well. We got a clean race car, not one ding on it.”

It was Gaulding’s third top-10 finish and first top-five finish of the season.

“This is my first time ever coming here, Pensacola, wonderful track,” Gaulding said. “Can’t thank all the fans enough. We had a really great weekend. We knew how much hard work it takes to get here. I think in a couple weeks we’ll be able to be in Victory Circle. We’re working really hard for it.” Van Doorn capped a whirlwind weekend with a third-place finish at Pensacola.

“I don’t even know what to say, this is so unexpected,” said Van Doorn. "Seven days ago, I didn't even have this ride. The biggest thing was just learning the car and learning what the feel is.”

Brett Moffitt, the leader in the K&N Pro Series East standings, was fourth, followed by another impressive finish for Kenzie Ruston in fifth. It was her second top-five finish in a row.

Moffitt has a nine-point lead over Gaulding and Dylan Kwasniewski in the K&N Pro Series East standings. Ruston is in fourth place, 10 points behind Moffitt. The NAPA Auto Parts 150 from Five Flags Speedway will be televised on Speed on May 2 at 3 p.m. EST.

The next K&N Pro Series East race is the Blue Ox 100 at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia on April 25.
