ASCS 360 Sprint Class Racer Brian Brown Earns Top Podium Spot at Devil's Bowl

Brian Brown experienced a stellar season during 2013 with 16 wins
Coming off of a victory at Jacksonville, Illinois, Brian Brown and the Casey's General Stores/FVP #21 team showed up at Mesquite, Texas with aspirations of another good run.

Lining up in the ASCS 360 class, the Missouri driver had confidence on his side prior to the waving of the green flag deeming the Devil's Bowl Winternationals underway. When asked if his win the week prior had a bearing on his mindset going into the event, Brown said, "Yes. Anytime you win, it breeds confidence."

Starting sixth in his heat race, Brian Brown wasted no time positioning himself in the front of the pack. Weeding his way through the field, he crossed the finish line in third place.

As the feature neared, anticipation filled the air. The fans were eager to watch a fierce battle and the drivers had the podium on their minds. Starting in the eighth spot, Brian Brown went to work, methodically passing the drivers ahead of him. In fact, by the end of lap-1 he had already managed to reach second place.

As the race continued, Brown was diligent in his pursuit of the coveted lead position. Persistence eventually paid off when he took the first place spot in the sixth. Once taking over the front position, Brian Brown never looked back. When the waving of the checkered flag signified the crossing of the finish line, Brown had taken the victory, leading the second place driver by three seconds.

Looking back, brown said, "It's a very tricky track to get ahold of. I feel we had a great baseline set-up there. We just had to take a chance on the first couple of laps, moving on the track where no-one else was."

Recalling as a youngster watching racing greats like Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindle and Doug Wolfgang win at this particular event, Brian Brown obviously found his recent victory at the Devil's Bowl Winternationals rewarding. However, this race was of significance to Brian Brown for other reasons as well.

If for no other reason, it validated an incredible season. The victory signified his 16th win of 2013. Of course great driving skills and a commitment to earn his rightful spots on the podium played a huge role in his success, but Brown was also quick to credit his team. "The team is most important, in my eyes." he explained. "A great team and great partners."

Of course, experience has taught Brian Brown and his crew that there is no replacement for proper maintenance, and keeping one's car in optimal running condition is the recipe for consistent podium finishes. When asked his take on maintenance, the driver's answer was short and to the point. "Maintenance is important, because if you fall out you can't win."

As an advocate of keeping his car running in tip-top condition, Brown is a firm believer in using K&N products to ensure the internal components of his engine remain contaminant free, while still allowing ample air flow to provide stellar performance.

"I use the Carbon air cleaner," he explained, "and all of the oil used to protect it. I feel K&N makes a great product that can help our team achieve their goals."

Although savoring his recent win at Mesquite, Brian Brown and his crew had very little time to bask in their success. In fact, once the checkered flag had waved, it was time to start thinking about a journey to the Arkansas town of Little Rock, where he would compete in the ASCS Short Track Nationals.

Even though the season's end neared, that was no indication that Brian Brown was ready to slack off, as he would also be preparing for the upcoming season. When asked what fans can expect from Brian Brown in the upcoming season, he concluded, "Hopefully, just to build on a strong 2013 season, and to put Brian Brown Racing in Victory Lane a few more times."

K&N’s Jeremy Templeman Wins the 2013 SCFTA Open Novice Championship

One of the gnarliest rite of passage any motorsport participant needs to survive is the run amuck Novice class. For K&N's Printed Materials Product Manager, Jeremy Templeman, 2013 was his rookie year racing in the Southern California Flat Track Series (SCFTA) hosted at Perris Raceway, and his trick for enduring was to stay out front of the jostle as often as possible.

"You're right to call it surviving the Novice class. It can be a little sketchy, with a lot of guys, most with little experience, trying to go fast and fight for a position. I went down hard in round 9 and had to have my wounds attended to by the EMT," Templeman affirmed. "I won the championship by being consistent and attending all but one race. I didn't dominate the class per se. I made the podium four times with one win, one second, and two third place finishes. It's definitely a good feeling to have secured the championship in my first year of racing flat track. However, I'm a humble person and I realize that I got lucky. I've got my work cut out for me in 2014."

In winning the Open Novice title Templeman raced 11 out of the 12 races of the SCFTA 2013 season. He only missed the first race because "I hadn't gotten the bike ready yet," he said. Our first story with Templeman came after he reached the podium for the first time with a solid 3rd place in round 4 back in June. After that he seemed to get the hang of it in a big way, and he in fact convincingly won the round 8 main event with a fastest lap time of 16.23 seconds.

"I got another 3rd place in round 9, even after crashing," he adds. "I was running in second and made an attempt at first. But I lost momentum avoiding contact, and that let third place come around me."

"2014 is going to be interesting," Templeman continues. "To thwart novice sand baggers (50+ novice was full of sand baggers turning faster laps than 50+ amateur) the track owners are bumping the top 3 of each novice class up to amateur. So it looks like I'll be racing the Open Amateur class next year. I'm going to freshen up the top end on my bike. Make a few improvements. But mainly I need to improve my riding. I think racing with faster guys will result me in riding faster. But it'll probably take a few races before I start seeing progress."

When we last spoke, Templeman's oldest son, Zack, had just started his motorsport bonding sessions with dad, racing the 50cc beginner class on his CRF50F (with training wheels).

"Zach definitely enjoyed his season of racing," said dad. "I didn't take him to the events during the summer though. In June I noticed that he lost motivation to gear up and get on the bike when it was warm. So he didn't race during July or August. He loves racing though. He's only three-and-a-half years old, so the concept of winning is apparently still beyond him. Even when he finishes last he comes off the track pumped up on his win. This is a good attitude and I'm glad that he's just there having fun. I see some track dad's, even in Zach's class, that take their kids' racing much too serious."

Templeman insists he doesn't want to be that dad. He even refuses to take his own racing too seriously. "That spoils the fun," he says. "My goal for Zach next year is to have him off of the training wheels. My younger son Jacob is a few months shy of being two-years-old. I can see that he wants to race. Possibly even more than Zach does. Once he's big enough to touch the pegs and handlebars at the same time he'll be racing."

"I definitely want to thank K&N for their support all season. I couldn't have raced without it, or the excellent products."

Kyle Wyman Experiences Exciting and Action-Packed Season

Kyle Wyman had the opportunity to race in both the Harley -Davidson and Daytona Superbike classes during the 2013 season
Kyle Wyman had the opportunity to race in both the Harley -Davidson and Daytona Superbike classes during the 2013 season
Kyle Wyman embarked upon the first race of the 2013 season with anticipation and vigor. Having walked away victorious at the Daytona International Speedway, in the AMA Pro XR1200 series the two previous years, the rider had aspirations of a "three-peat.

However, this event brought with it much different circumstances from what he had grown accustomed to during previous seasons. As the race wound down, a plethora of riders were in a heated race for the finish line, compared to a four-rider pack in the front the years before.

"This time 10 other riders were able to stay in the draft," recalled Wyman. "So it really changed the outlook of the race, and I'd say the competitive threat had shown up greater than ever in the class.

"I did my best to work the drafting strategy during the race, and put myself in the best position on the last lap. There are a couple of things I learned about the draft that day that hopefully, I will have an opportunity to apply later on," continued the rider.

Nearing the race's end, it appeared that Wyman might be able to pull off the "three-peat" he was looking for. However, it's not over until the waving of the checkered flag, and Wyman was passed by a fellow rider with only 100-feet to go. In turn, Wyman accepted a second-place spot on the podium.

"Going into the race, my confidence level was at an all-time high, knowing that in 2011 and 2012 I was able to win the XR-1200 events there. " Wyman recalled. "It was such a crazy race this year, with 11 riders battling in one huge pack; it really could have gone to any one of us. After the race, I was just extremely happy to be on the podium due to the nature of the race. And I was feeling good about whatever the rest of the season had in store for me."
In spite of injury, Kyle Wyman had an exciting season in the AMA Pro1200 and Daytona Sportbike series this season
In spite of injury, Kyle Wyman had an exciting season in the AMA Pro1200 and Daytona Sportbike series this season

With the first race of 2013 behind him, the rider was excited about what would transpire in the months to come. And as it worked out, his Daytona performance soon opened new doors, as he was presented with an opportunity with Triumph to compete from the seat of a 2013 Daytona 675R in in the AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike series.

"I was definitely excited to have another shot in the Daytona Sportbike class," recalled Wyman. "Having experience on the 675R in the past, I was really looking forward to riding the triple again.

"I actually built the bikes on my own," he explained. It was difficult to put together a program under KWR once the season had already started, and my resources were limited. Luckily, a friend let me use his barn as a race shop.

The biggest part of the learning curve was learning how to build a race bike from stock," continued Kyle Wyman. "I think being in a position where I'm working on my own stuff has a great benefit to my outlook on racing in general. It uncovered a level of respect for the sport that I hadn't fully understood in the past. I think it has made me a stronger person as a result."

Although testing time was limited, the rider rolled into Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin eager to compete in round two of the series. Although somewhat struggling in the event, finishing in 18th and 15th places, morale was high. He had taken the first step in growing acquainted with these bikes and actually increased his times by an excess of two seconds during the days following. With many laps to come during the remainder of the season, he was stoked and eager to go.

But bad luck reared its ugly head just days before a scheduled race at Barber Motorsports Park, when he sustained a shattered radius in his right arm during a mountain bike accident.

But Kyle Wyman is not one to let a little bad luck detour his drive. In turn, he used to time away from racing to re-energize the KWR XR1200 rental program for 2013. The level of participation was unsurpassed as seven riders represented Kye Wyman Racing at the Indianapolis speedway.

After three months of healing and anticipation, Wyman returned to fierce competition, racing in both the Triumph Superbike and Harley-Davidson classes.

With an interesting string of events during the 2013 season behind him the rider is looking forward to a future filled with exciting and fierce battles. "Next season, I will come back to the XR 1200 series, and my goal is to win the championship," ensured the rider. "In 2012, I was the championship leader and had to sit out due to injury, while my teammate Michael Barnes, took over to eventually be the champion. KWR is capable of winning championships, and I'm solely focused on giving myself another opportunity as a rider to be successful.

"Preparation is always the key to success in anything you do. And our plan is to be more than prepared for Daytona and the rest of the rounds in the 2014 championship."

The rider is acutely aware that having one's bike in tip-top running condition will play a very important role in future success and depends upon only the best to keep the internal components of his engines contaminant free.

"Properly maintained motorcycles are what win championships," he ensured, "and K&N products give us that edge. Not only do we use K&N oil and air filters on our race motorcycles, but we also utilize their products in our trucks and race haulers. K&N is synonymous with performance, and that's why so many race teams, in multiple racing disciplines rely on their products."

In closing Kyle Wyman said, " Fans can expect Kyle Wyman to continue using K&N products and working tirelessly to be the first one across the finish line of race day."
