The Jeep Cherokee model has a long history in the Jeep lineup. First produced in 1974 by the American Motors Corporation (AMC), the term “Sport Utility” first appeared in the 1974 Jeep Cherokee SJ sales brochure. Later on the Jeep XJ Cherokee began the modern sport utility vehicle trend spawning copycat models such as the Ford Explorer. The Jeep Liberty KJ was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Cherokee, however, outside of North America the Liberty was known as a Jeep Cherokee KJ. Jeep discontinued the Liberty and resurrected the Cherokee in the United States with the introduction of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee KL crossover SUV.

The 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Cherokee KL can be equipped with either the standard 2.4-liter Tigershark I4, or a smaller version of Chrysler’s corporate engine the 3.2L Pentastar V6 engine. 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Cherokee KL owners who opted for the EPA estimated 29 MPG and 271 horsepower FlexFuel V6 can easily outfit their Jeep crossover SUV with the superior airflow and superior performance associated with a K&N Aircharger air intake system. Typically, the factory air intake tubing, stock air filter box, and disposable air filter is a significant point of restriction in modern fuel injected cars or trucks. Because of this fact, K&N has developed an Aircharger air intake system for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Cherokee 3.2L V6 designed to free up horsepower by eliminating these restrictive factory components.

By replacing the stock accordion hosing & enclosed air box of 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee 3.2L models with a roto-molded HDPE air intake tube coupled to an open element K&N reusable air filter, K&N air intake system 63-1569 is able to provide an estimated additional 7.53 horsepower and 4.58 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the K&N reusable air filter RF-1048 included with the 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee 3.2L intake is protected by an application specific air filter heat shield to help keep inlet air temperatures (IAT) within factory tolerances. For Cherokee owners who take their 2014, 2015 or 2016 KL off-road, K&N offers a water repellant Drycharger® air filter wrap, number RF-1048DK, to extend service intervals.

Whether 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee KL owners use their crossover SUV as a fuel efficient grocery getter, or for conquering a rugged trail, the K&N 63-1569 Aircharger Air Intake system will provide increased performance with better engine sound for years to come.

Laguna Hills HS Students use a $10K Grant to Restore K&N Equipped 1966 Ford Pickup

Laguna Hills HS automotive students installed new brakes; steering, suspension, wheels and tires to allow the 1966 Ford F100 pickup to cruise safely down the street with a mild custom stance

Opened in 1978, Laguna Hills High School (LHHS) is a relatively small high school in the Southern California beach community of Laguna Hills. Excelling in academics and athletics, LHHS also has a fully functioning Automotive Technology program, which is part of Coastline Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Laguna Hills automotive students can use the LHHS auto program to receive course credit at two local community colleges enabling students to continue their automotive education and possibly turn a passion for the automotive industry into a career.

In the summer of 2012, Laguna Hills High School students received a donated 1966 Ford F100 pickup to be used as a class restoration project. Instructor Timothy Chambers worked with Coastline ROP to apply for and secure a $10,000 grant in money from the Hagerty Education Program. The Hagerty Education Program awards scholarships and educational grants to organizations committed to "hands-on education" and making a difference in the lives of young people through the appeal of historic vehicles and vessels. The students aptly named the project “Restoration 66: Connecting Students with Cars, History, Family, and Community”.

Before any work on the 1966 Ford F100 pickup could begin, LHHS students were asked to construct a plan for the restoration, and line up all the parts and pieces they would need. Timothy Chambers tasked the students with researching the role of the automobile in their own family’s history. There were many great stories spanning multiple generations, each centered on how a simple machine somehow played a significant role in their lives.

Timothy Chambers and his automotive students knew the big Ford 390 engine needed superior airflow in order to obtain superior performance so they used round K&N air filter, # E-3699

Once a plan was made for the theme of the truck, the restoration work began. The interior was completely gutted, the aging 352 cubic inch engine was removed, suspension and steering components were removed and replaced, and the body was prepped for paint. A custom upholstered seat and headliner from George’s Upholstery makes the interior very classic and comfortable.

A blueprinted 390 cubic inch engine now sits underneath the hood, breathing through a chrome Ford Racing air cleaner with K&N air filter element, and a custom exhaust system installed by Collins Exhaust. New brakes, steering, suspension, wheels and tires allow the truck to cruise safely down the street with a mild custom stance. A beautiful coat of bright Porsche Red paint sprayed by One Day Paint and Body makes this truck standout in a crowd.

Timothy Chambers and his automotive students knew the big Ford 390 engine needed superior airflow in order to obtain superior performance. A round K&N air filte E-3699 allows the Ford big block engine to breathe easily without sacrificing filtration. The 13.125” x 4.0” air filter fits perfectly inside the chrome Ford Racing air cleaner assembly.

Chambers and the LHHS students are very proud of how the restoration of the truck turned out, and plan to take it to many car shows and events. None of the work completed would have been possible without the grant and assistance provided by the Hagerty Education Program, and vendors who provided product or offered discounts on parts to finish the build, including:

Murray Racing Captures 2nd Place Finish in 47th Annual Bud Light SCORE BAJA 500

Murray Racing set out to conquer the 47th Annual Bud Light SCORE BAJA 500

Murray Racing set out to conquer the 47th Annual Bud Light SCORE BAJA 500 in only their second race in their new K&N filters equipped Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo UTV

Leaving the 2015 Baja 500 starting line at 1 PM, Jason Murray took on driver’s duties for the first half of the 510 mile race with Monty Aldrich as navigator and quickly took the lead

The Murray Racing crew of Jason & Derek Murray, Bill Kugel, Monty Aldrich, Bob Jones, and Aaron Juarez set out to conquer the 47th Annual Bud Light SCORE BAJA 500 in only their second race in the new Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo. The Murray Racing crew had counted on some additional pit crew help, however, when the time came they would have to rely on just six people to race, chase, and pit for 500 miles across the northern Mexico desert. With such a new race vehicle this presents a huge challenge, however the Murray Racing team double and triple checked everything to ensure that the 2015 Baja 500 wouldn’t be the team’s first DNF in over 35 Best in the Desert series races.

Come race day the number 1917 K&N filters equipped Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo left the starting line second in the UTV Class 19 around 1:00 PM. Jason Murray took on driver’s duties for the first half of the 510 mile race with Monty Aldrich acting as navigator. Murray Racing quickly passed the lead UTV and built up a hefty lead due to a traffic jam further back. That lead didn’t last long when a cracked wheel forced Jason and Monty to pull over and install the spare. This, combined with a roll over in a silt bed, put Murray Racing in sixth place as they came through the race pits at race mile 105.

After refueling, giving the K&N equipped Maverick Turbo a once-over for damage, and loading up a new spare tire Murray Racing was off again and headed toward a 40-mile section of brutally tough whoops. Jason Murray and Monty Aldrich made up several positions through the whoops section as many competitors, from several classes, were stopped on the course after breaking something. Sailing through toward the second pit at race mile 267 the number 1917 Can-Am Maverick was back in second place.

The 2015 Bud Light SCORE Baja 500 became a sprint to the finish line for Murray Racing with Derek Murray attempting to chase down the # 1932 UTV with a mere 50 yards to go

The team had another setback at race mile 255, just 12 miles from the next scheduled pit stop, when the Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo ran out of fuel. The team scrambled to grab their gear and supplies to head back to mile 255 where the number 1917 was sitting. After struggling to find the car and refuel it, Murray Racing was back in action with Derek Murray behind the wheel, and Bill Kugel navigating the # 1917 K&N filters equipped Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo. At that point the team was sitting in fourth in Class 19 UTV and prepared to make up for lost time as the sun began to set.

Derek Murray and Bill sailed through race mile 320 passing two other UTV racers stopped in their race pits. This put the # 1917 K&N powered Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo back in second place. During a fast section along the coast and cliffs, Derek suffered a loss of brakes in the Can-Am Maverick forcing him to race conservatively until the next pit stop at race mile 430. The crew diagnosed the braking issue as a loose banjo bolt on a rear caliper caused by a rock contacting the fitting and quickly made the repair. As quick as they were, it wasn’t quick enough, as the number 1932 UTV came by Murray Racing putting the team back in third.

Due to correction factors based on starting time, and penalties accrued while racing, the number 1932 UTV finished fourth in class

Due to correction factors based on starting time, and penalties accrued while racing, the number 1932 UTV finished fourth in class with second place going to # 1917 Murray Racing

Now in third place with 80 miles to go, Derek Murray quickly caught the 1932 UTV making the pass and regaining second place. Another cracked wheel on the K&N filters sponsored # 1917 Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo necessitated a spare tire swap letting the 1932 UTV by once more. The Baja 500 quickly became a sprint to the finish line with Derek Murray attempting to chase down the # 1932 UTV with 50 yards to go. Unable to close those last 2 feet and make the pass in time, the number 1917 Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo of Murray Racing crossed the finish line third in Class 19 UTV.

The next afternoon official results were announced at an awards ceremony. Due to correction factors based on starting time, and penalties accrued while racing, the number 1932 UTV actually finished fourth in class with the second spot going to Murray Racing in the K&N equipped number 1917 Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo. With their second place finish in the 47th Annual Bud Light SCORE BAJA 500, Team Murray Racing moved up to first in the points standing with two more races to go.

Looking forward to their next race, from Las Vegas, Nevada to Reno, Nevada, Murray Racing already has the # 1917 Can-Am Maverick Max Turbo torn down to refresh, rebuilt, or replace parts. Murray Racing would like to thank their sponsors, who make outstanding products, including: Can Am, ITP wheels/tires, Lone Star Racing Suspension, Fox Shocks, K&N filters, Beard seats, Yoshimura exhaust, Bert’s UTV, Shorai batteries, Lazer Star lights, TORCO fluids, AMR graphics, Rugged Radios, and Monster Tire Seal. Plus they’d like to thank all their team members, wives, kids and the many friends who came out to support them.

K&N air intake system for the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Ford Mustang Shelby with a 5.4 liter engine

In 1952, a legend’s racing career began from a simple trip to a drag race. That very same year that individual jumped into a MG TC, raced in and won his first road race. An accident where he flipped his car four times still didn’t stop him. He raced the following year with his arm in a cast and continued to achieve victory after victory on his way to greatness. This race car driver was Carroll Shelby. In 1964 Ford approached Shelby and asked him to help make the 1965 Ford Mustang, hoping that he can duplicate the success he had in creating the Cobra. The Shelby movement went strong manufacturing model after model and gaining international success up until 1969 when Ford and Shelby parted ways due to personal differences. However, the Shelby era has come back again. In 2006 the Shelby returned manufacturing the Shelby GT at 319 horsepower and Shelby GT500 with gains of 500 horsepower. The Shelby resurrection has spearheaded many new advancements and models in the Ford Mustang product line.

Tommy Phillips Kicks Off 2015 NHRA Season Triumphantly in K&N Equipped Dragster

In 7 rounds, Tommy Phillips never trailed on the line

In 7 rounds, Tommy Phillips never trailed on the line; taking the reaction time advantage in every round except the quarterfinal, where he and Ryen Lamb left with identical times

The Super Comp victory at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway marked the 31st national event triumph in Phillips’s illustrious career

K&N supported NHRA racer Tommy Phillips drove his CBS ArcSafe/K&N Filters/Orteq Energy Technologies/Wood Racing dragster to victory in Super Comp at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The victory marked the 31st national event triumph in Phillips’s illustrious career. The win also extended one of the most impressive streaks in NHRA Lucas Oil competition, as 2015 marks the tenth consecutive season in which Phillips has earned at least one NHRA national event crown.

“It feels good to start off on a high note,” Phillips expressed, as the Las Vegas event was the first 2015 NHRA outing for his team. “Our equipment is second to none; and all of our cars have been flawless. I’ve said, only half-joking, for several years that the weak link on this team is behind the wheel. I’m just glad that I was able to hold up my end of the bargain this time around.”

In seven elimination rounds, Tommy Phillips never trailed on the starting line; taking the reaction time advantage in every round except the quarterfinal, where he and Ryen Lamb left with identical .014 reaction times. His path to victory went through Greg Hicks, recent Division 7 winner Bobby Mirizio, Keith Winters, Neil Markuson, Lamb, Dave Meziere and final round opponent Ryan Cook. Cook, who was appearing in his first ever national event, wheeled his dragster all the way to the final and made a very representative lap. But Phillips saved his best run for last, posting a stellar .004 reaction time, and crossing the finish line in his CBS ArcSafe/K&N Filters/Orteq Energy Technologies/Wood Racing dragster first with a 9.060 elapsed time.

2015 marks the 10th consecutive season in which Phillip's earned at least one NHRA national event crown

2015 marks the 10th consecutive season in which Phillip's earned at least one NHRA national event crown

“Anytime we get a chance to celebrate victory on the national stage, it’s special,” emphasized Phillips. “But this win was even better than most. Cody and Meghan Ortowski of Orteq Energy Technologies, one of our major team partners were on hand for the event, as were Buddy and Karen Wood. We’re extremely fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic people who support our team. And I just can’t say enough about Jay and Linda Thornburg. Our racing program has become so much more than a weekend job, and they’re with me 100% every step of the way.”

“Thanks also to the great people at K&N Filters, Sunset Performance Racing Engines, APD Carbs, Capco Contractors, Hughes Performance, Hoosier Racing Tire, TNT Supercars, Lucas Oil Products, and Sullivan Motorsports. These great people who surround our team allow us to accomplish incredible things,” said Phillips.
