Characteristics of the Best Oil Filter - Not All Oil Filters Are Created Equal

An engine's oil filter is designed to remove contaminants from motor oil. The motor oil inside an engine is continually exposed to the byproducts of an internal combustion engine, including microscopic metallic particles from the wearing of metal surfaces as they rub against one another. If not removed from the motor oil by using an oil filter, these contaminants can continue to circulate and grind against the part surfaces causing excessive wear. Fortunately an oil filter does a pretty good job of removing many of the particles and sludge.

Simply because oil filters are all designed to do the same job, doesn't mean that they get the job done equally well. Additionally, an oil filter that claims to have a high efficiency rating doesn't exactly correlate to a cleaner engine. Sometimes if the oil filter becomes clogged, or if oil pressures are too high due to a restrictive filter media, the oil will bypass the filter completely and dirty oil will recirculate through the engine. Recirculating this dirty oil can be far more damaging than using an oil filter with an average filtration efficiency rating.

The automotive industry has three basic levels when classifying oil filters. At the bottom of the list is the value/standard level oil filters, hanging around the middle are the premium/high-mileage oil filters, and up at the top are the high-level premium/performance oil filters. There are several factors which determine how an oil filter is classified; however the easiest way to distinguish between the categories is based on price. It almost goes without saying, that the most basic oil filters are the least expensive and the high-level premium/performance oil filters come at a higher price tag.

Featured just behind the customized K&N wrapped Polaris RZR/4 XP1000 is the Katie V Racing Polaris RZR XP900 piloted by professional model and accomplished UTV racer Katie Vernola. Shortly after graduating High School K&N's October 2015 calendar model Katie Vernola began modeling as an easy and fun way to earn money. Katie used her modeling gigs to save up the funds needed to purchase her Polaris Ranger RZR 900. Initially, Katie had no intention of racing her new side-by-side. But after she attended a Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Series race as a spectator she caught the racing bug. Currently Katie races in both the Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Series and the Terracross series.

Further back in this photo is professional short-course racer RJ Anderson showing us how to whip his Polaris RZR XP1000 through the turn below the famous Glen Helen Raceway sign. RJ Anderson is a professional off-road racer who currently competes in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS) in both the Pro-Lite and Pro 2 truck classes. Additionally, RJ races a Polaris RZR XP 1000 in the WORCS off-road racing series in the Pro UTV class. RJ Anderson became well known for the 2013 UTVUnderground.com video titled RJ Anderson XP1K and the follow up XP1K2 video. In these videos RJ Anderson is seen performing almost unthinkable stunts behind the wheel of his Polaris RZR XP1000 and in turn RJ has earned internet fame.

Not to be forgotten, of course, is the additional K&N October 2015 calendar model Miss Kayla Rae Reid. Kayla was born in Fairfax, Virginia before moving to Palm Springs, California as a youth. She began her modeling career at 21 and has aspirations of acting, casting for Sports Illustrated, and becoming a TV personality. When not modeling Kayla loves cooking, working out, being outdoors as well as spending quality time with friends and family.

John Mickel was born with oval racing in his blood. His father competed in local UK stock car events before introducing John to Mini Stocks, running on quarter mile ovals, at the tender age of 10. Before the age of 19, John had already become a World and European Champion on short ovals with Superstox, an open wheeled racer similar to American Outlaws. In 2001, John became a UK and World Legends Champion on a road course as well as a European SCSA Champion, a sanctioning body equivalent to the American Speed Association, on large ovals.

Currently K&N sponsored driver John Mickel competes in the 2015 UK Legends Championship. Legends Cars are 5/8 scale purpose built race cars based on pre-World War II Ford, Chevy and Dodge bodies. Eight body styles are produced but each car is powered by a 122 horsepower Yamaha 1200/1250 cc motorcycle engine. With a full tube frame chassis, Bilstein coil over shocks, and 13” wide racing slicks, Legends cars accelerate like a rocket and stick to the track like a roller coaster.

K&N Air Filters supported John Mickel arrived at Snetterton Circuit for round 14 of the 2015 UK Legends Championship on a high note following a full sweep of six race wins out of six races at the last meeting at Silverstone Circuit. John’s good fortune continued with three race wins on day one at Snetterton Circuit followed by two more race wins the following day. Unfortunately John’s third race on day two at Snetterton ended with a DNF, but having set a new lap record of 2.14.869, John couldn’t complain.

John Mickel’s final race of the weekend ended because of another driver who was later penalized for driving dangerously. Despite this DNF John still finished third overall for the day. Further rule infringements for other drivers could possibly push John up into second place overall for the day. The decision is still pending. The official Championship points have not yet been published; however, the Mickel Motorsport Team believes that their points lead has been extended to over 700 points.

John Mickel drove every race at Snetterton Circuit like his number 4 K&N filters equipped K-Seal UK Legends Championship car was on rails. The handling and the setup of the K&N powered orange mean machine was untouchable by any other driver that weekend and no matter where John started on the grid, when he finished, he finished in first place.
