For years the only sport inspired motorcycles offered in the U.S. less than 600 cubic centimeters were the small Ninja 250 and 500 models from Kawasaki. Upgrade Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 Cummins Diesel Performance With K&N Diesel Air Intake

The second generation 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 was a sales success and Dodge had the good sense to carry over the 5.9L Cummins 6BT 12-valve diesel engine for Ram 2500 & 3500 models

Cummins Inc. has been a major player in engine manufacturing since it was founded in 1919 by Clessie Lyle Cummins. The Cummins Engine Company focused on developing the engine patented by Rudolf Diesel years earlier. With decades of experience developing and building diesel engines it was no accident that Dodge began offering the Cummins Diesel powered Ram pickup in 1989. The Cummins Diesel engine powered first generation Dodge Ram soon became a viable alternative to large gasoline powered V8 engines of the time. In fact, the Dodge Ram diesel had its competition from General Motors and Ford beat by being the only member of the big three to offer a turbo diesel engine; plus the 5.9L Cummins 6BT 12-valve diesel was direct injected and didn't rely on glow plugs for cold starting.

Despite the Cummins Diesel engine the first generation Dodge Ram, merely a face lifted carryover of the Dodge D-Series which had been around since 1972, sold poorly compared to its counterparts from Ford and GM. That is however until 1994 when Dodge introduced the second generation Dodge Ram pickup. The fully redesigned 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 immediately became a sales success. Dodge had the good sense to carry over the 5.9L Cummins 6BT 12-valve diesel engine over as an option for second generation Ram 2500 & 3500 models. Although the Cummins 6BT 12-valve 5.9L L6 Diesel outperformed the 5.9-liter LA/Magnum V8 engines found in the first gen Ram, Dodge introduced the 8.0L Magnum V10 engine as an option for 1994. The 8.0L Magnum V10, basically a cast-iron version of a Dodge Viper engine, was the most powerful gasoline-burning pickup truck engine of the time.

Second Generation 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 pickup owners with the Cummins 6BT 12-valve 5.9L L6 Diesel, or mid-1998 and later Cummins ISB 24-valve 5.9L L6 Diesel engine can easily bolt on more horsepower and torque with K&N diesel air intake system 57-1525. This K&N diesel air intake system replaces the factory accordion hose ducting with a performance engineered roto-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) air intake tube. At the end of the K&N air intake tube is a high-flow washable and reusable K&N air filter designed to provide superior airflow, superior performance, and excellent engine protection. This K&N diesel air intake also includes an application specific air filter heat shield to deflect the high under hood temps associated with diesel engines away from incoming airflow. Dodge rolled out the third generation Ram 1500 pickup truck in 2002, while the 2500 & 3500 Ram trucks came a year later. With its proven reliability, Dodge carried over the Cummins ISB 24-valve 5.9L L6 Diesel engine into the new trucks. However, the diesel pickup movement was beginning to gather steam and Dodge's tried and true 5.9L Cummins diesel engine soon found itself out muscled , and under sized compared to the General Motors Duramax 6.6L V8 diesel, and even the problematic Ford 6.0L Powerstroke diesel. It took Dodge and Cummins a few years to catch up, but by January 2007 when the 6.7L L6 Cummins was introduced it had both Chevy and Ford beat. 2010 ushered in a new generation of heavy-duty Ram 2500 & 3500 pickups as well as a restructuring of the Chrysler Corporation, officially FCA US LLC. Now owned by holding company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ram Trucks became its own brand no longer falling under the Dodge umbrella. Now in its sixth year of production, the fourth generation Ram received a series of updates in 2013. While the 6.7L L6 Cummins diesel engine has been carried along since its introduction in 2007, both the fourth gen Ram Truck and its Cummins diesel engine have undergone enough changes to necessitate different intake systems for 2010-2012 Ram 2500/3500 Cummins powered pickups and 2013-2016 Ram 2500/3500 Cummins diesel trucks. Much of these changes revolve around increasingly tighter emissions regulations, more stringent electronic engine controls, and sensitivity to inlet air temperatures. As a result K&N has had to think outside of the box, or inside the box as was the case with fourth gen Ram diesels, when developing K&N diesel air intake systems.

K&N 2013-2016 Ram 2500 & 3500 6.7-liter Cummins diesel air intake system 63-1568 retains the stock air box but includes a K&N high-flow diesel air filter and new roto-molded air intake tube

2010-2012 Ram Trucks 2500/3500 Cummins 6.7L diesel powered pickup owners once again have a choice between a roto-molded HDPE diesel air intake system 63-1562, and a K&N Blackhawk Induction System diesel air intake system 71-1562. To increase power on 2010-2012 Ram Trucks 2500/3500 Cummins 6.7L diesel powered pickups K&N had to engineer a large free flowing covered air filter box to house a K&N high-flow air filter. The K&N roto-molded HDPE diesel air intake system incorporates a cold air intake snorkel to help draw in cooler air with an additional air source. The result is an estimated additional 8.2 horsepower and 14.76 lb-ft of torque on a 2011 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7L Turbo Diesel. While the K&N Blackhawk Induction System 2010-2012 Ram Trucks 2500/3500 Cummins 6.7L diesel air intake system does not include a cold air intake snorkel, the performance enhancements are very similar. When installed on a 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7L turbo diesel, this air intake system provided an estimated additional 7.15 horsepower and 18.58 lb-ft of torque to the wheels.

K&N performed extensive testing on the 2013-2016 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 6.7-liter Cummins diesel air intake and it performed better by retaining the stock Ram Active Air filter box

Keeping with the trend of increasingly tighter emissions regulations, more stringent electronic engine controls, and sensitivity to inlet air temperatures; Ram Trucks engineers had to get creative with the 2013 and later Ram Trucks 2500 and 3500 Cummins 6.7L diesel pickups. Ram Trucks engineers developed a new diesel air filter box technology that they call "Ram Active Air". The Ram Active Air box is a dual-inlet type diesel air filter box with the ability to vary the source of incoming air. In normal driving conditions air is drawn from a protected source under the hood. As under hood temperatures rise, the Ram Active Air filter box switches to a sort of cold air intake system drawing air from directly behind the truck's front grille. Ram developed this system to combat power loss in hot, dry, up-hill conditions when temperatures under the hood have been shown to climb to extreme levels.

K&N performed extensive testing, and each time it was apparent that the 2013-2016 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 6.7-liter Cummins diesel equipped trucks performed better, and without sacrificing drivability, by retaining the stock Ram Active Air filter box. So K&N diesel air intake system 63-1568 for 2013-2016 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 6.7-liter Cummins diesel trucks replaces the disposable factory air filter with a K&N high-flow diesel air filter and replaces the convoluted factory air intake ducting with a new roto-molded air intake tube.

On the dyno, the K&N 2013-2016 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 6.7-liter Cummins diesel air intake produced an estimated additional 14.65 horsepower at 2500 rpm and a substantial 23.86 pound-feet of torque increase at 2122 rpm over the factory system when installed on an otherwise stock 2013 Ram 2500 6.7L Turbo Diesel.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show is a trade-only event bringing the automotive aftermarket industry’s biggest companies, brightest minds, and hottest products to one place, the Las Vegas Convention Center. While the annual SEMA show is meant to bring the industry together to do business it has also become a vacation destination. As if there wasn't already plenty to do and see in Las Vegas, Nevada, the SEMA show gathers the finest examples of custom vehicles into an area of approximately 3.2 million square feet. The official unveiling of Mike Young’s Chris Carlson Hot Rods built custom 1949 Buick Super 56S Sedanette epitomizes the essence of a SEMA Show build and formal reveal.

Chris Carlson Hot Rods is a nationally recognized full service hot rod shop located in Mulvane, Kansas specializing in custom builds, hot rods, muscle cars, restorations and street rods. One of the cornerstones of Chris Carlson’s work is his ability to combine old school flair with cutting edge technology. Additionally, Chris’ builds are a blend of the customers’ ideas with his expert knowledge, which results in a one of a kind, top quality car. Mike Young, owner of the 1949 Buick Super 56S Sedanette unveiled during a crowded NAPA/Martin Senour Automotive Finishes media event at the 2015 SEMA Show, is on his third custom vehicle from Chris Carlson Hot Rods.

Mike Young is a car guy at heart, and grew up in the age of classic hot rodding. In the late 1950’s Mike grew up around the corner from hot rodding legend Darryl Starbird’s shop and used to hang out there as a youth. Mike’s first car was a 1947 Ford sedan, which he purchased for $50, followed by a 57 Chevy, 58 Plymouth, and a 1963 Plymouth Belvedere; all of which he owned during high school and they were all hot rodded. Since then Mike has owned many classic cars, but for his latest build he decided he wanted to build a big comfortable road car from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s.

Before acquiring the platform for his latest project, Mike almost bought a 1951 Chevrolet FleetLine he found in Oklahoma. However, during his search Mike stumbled across a 1949 Buick Sedanette that had been parked next to a barn in Iowa since 1959. Mike said, “It was love at first sight. The Buick has the features I was looking for in a Chevrolet but with a lot more character than the Chevy. The 1949 Buick represents the love affair the movie industry had with art deco in the late forties.” 1949 was a breakthrough year for Buick as it ushered in its first fully revised vehicle offerings following World War II.

The way in which Mike describes his Buick as having more character than a Chevy falls in line with how General Motors markets the Buick line. Buick is currently the oldest active American auto maker and the marque has always been intended as more upscale than Chevrolet, Pontiac, or Oldsmobile, but reasonably priced compared to the flagship Cadillac brand. 1949 ushered in the third generation Buick Super, which shared its c-body platform with the longer wheel base Roadmaster, and also saw the introduction of Buick’s most recognizable styling cue, the VentiPorts on the fender behind the front wheels.

The Buick VentiPorts come with their own interesting history. Buick stylist Ned Nickles added custom lighted VentiPorts to his personal 1948 Buick to simulate the exhaust stacks of a fighter plane as a reference to Buick having participated in the war effort. Upon seeing this, Buick chief Harlow Curtice ordered that non-lighting VentiPorts be installed on all 1949 Buicks. The number of VentiPorts along each side of the fender initially denoted the size of straight-eight engine installed, but later became representative of the number of cylinders.

Once Mike Young showed Chris Carlson pictures of the 1949 Buick Sedanette the ideas started flowing. In the end there were over 100 body modifications involved with this build. Most noticeable is the fact that Chris Carlson chopped 3” out of the roof height at the A pillar, 4” at the B pillar, 5” at the dog leg, followed by 8” at the trunk. “The lines of the Buick just scream please cut me up and make me into a cool fifty’s custom,” said Mike Young. The chopped top and sloping roofline give the 49 Buick a sleek aerodynamic appearance that appears to be moving fast even when parked. Very little of the Buick’s body was left untouched, and when it was time, the car was finished in Granite color paint from NAPA Martin Senour Automotive Finishes.

Chris Carlson Hot Rods kept with the vintage hot rod theme, while adding classy touches, inside the 1949 Buick Sedanette as well. The Silhouette light graphite leather covered front seats, wrap around rear seats, and center console are all from a 1964 Ford Thunderbird. The custom dash was fabricated using Dakota Digital gauges and modeled after an early Lincoln Zephyr. Additional interior upgrades include air conditioning and heat via a Vintage Air unit, sound dampening material from Dynamat, and a Custom Auto Sound stereo system. The interior work was performed by Chris Carlson Hot Rods using components from Clayton Manufacturing and CON2R.

Mike fully intends to drive his custom 1949 Buick Super Sedanette, and as such he had the powertrain and running gear brought up to modern day standards. A Blue Print Engines small block Chevy 383 stroker crate engine rated at 462 horsepower hides under the hood. Feeding this beast are dual 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetors sitting atop an air gap manifold. Mike went with a Mooneyes air cleaner for that retro look, but when it came time to choose an air filter for the Buick he couldn’t settle for average. Mike reached out to K&N and had a custom black media K&N air filter made to compliment the Buick’s theme. Speedway Motors block hugger headers and Magnaflow Exhaust route the fire breathing 383 stroker engine’s spent gasses to the rear of the car.

Worth noting is that Mike’s 1949 Buick was built to be driven exactly as it sits. The Buick isn’t sitting on airbags, in fact the Total Cost Involved (TCI) Mustang II front suspension and 4-link rear suspension are supported by RideTech coilover shocks at all four corners. 12” diameter GM disc brake rotors and matching calipers are mated to Wilwood pedals and master cylinder to provide modern stopping power. A GM THM 700R4 based transmission adds a much appreciated overdrive for cruising at highway speeds; while a Curry Enterprises Ford 9” rear end based unit with a 3.70:1 gear ratio turns the wheels. Chris Carlson completely boxed the stock frame in order to deal with the stresses involved with running an engine rated at over 3-times the power of the stock straight 8.

With its classic lines this highly customized, yet very tasteful, build should continue to awe crowds for years to come.
