With a very diverse race schedule for Brian Deegan in 2016, this year is going to be a fun but busy year. He is racing in several different race vehicles and race tracks that will include the legends on an asphalt oval track and sprint cars on the dirt oval track. But his two main series are the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORS) in his two-wheel-drive Pro 2, and the Global Rallycross driving for the Chip Ganassi Racing Rallycross team.

With this crazy schedule, Brian also had a very big change to his team sponsorships. After 10 years as one of the top Rockstar Energy athletes, Brian and Rockstar went their different ways and Brian rejoined one of his original sponsors NOS Energy as his title sponsor. He has also rejoined the K&N Filters team this year saying, “K&N are known for the best race products.  They help protect my motor and help me win races & championships.”

After a tough 2015 Lucas Oil Off Road season that plagued him with several mechanical malfunctions and just some bad luck, the 2016 season is looking to be a memorable year in his Pro2. Brian has been battling with the leaders at every turn, and he has qualified in the top 4 in every round to help give him great starting positions. The battles have been tough racing for the top spot, and with lots of mud and dust flying, the K&N 100-8591 air filter keeps it out of the motor and helps keep it running strong. That filter is a custom application for a few of the drivers in the LOORS and it is a good thing, there is a lot of dirt, dust, and mud flying around on those tracks. Out of half of the races so far, Brian has been in the lead with several trucks trying to do anything possible to get around him. But, the best battle was in round 3 where Brian was in the lead and suffered a flat tire due to the heavy rubbing with only three laps remaining. Luckily for him there was metal debris on the race track that caused a caution to come out. His pit crew was able to change the flat tire and keep him from going down a lap. With the green flag waiving, Brian started his charge to the front. He used every part of the track to make passes around the other trucks to make the pass for the podium spot in the second to last turn of the race. This kind of driving has enabled Brian to get on the podium four times in the first four rounds of the 2016 season.

Being consistent this year Brian finds himself in the second place spot for the Pro 2 championship race. Even with his great off road racing, he has committed to racing the Global Rallycross series, driving for Chip Ganassi. The two series conflict with each other for the next four rounds of LOORS. His commitment to Chip Ganassi Racing Team comes first, so as hard as it is Brian will be missing several rounds in his Pro 2. Brian said, “It is one of the hardest things I've had to do in racing because I know I can win the title again for the 7th time.”

Racing for Chip Ganassi is something Brian has strived for since he was a kid, and he said, “I’m just a kid from a small town in the Midwest with a goal to make it to one of the largest race organizations in the country.  Now my goal is to win!” So watch out for Brian in his new Chip Ganassi Racing NOS Energy, K&N Filters Ford Fiesta rally car. Brian will make his return to his Pro 2 in Glen Helen for Rounds 9 and 10 in LOORS to try and keep his podium streak alive.

2002-2016 Renault Megane-based Vehicles Get a Performance Upgrade

2002-2016 Renault Megane Air Filter

Mounted in a sturdy polyurethane frame, the multi-layer, oiled cotton medium lets more air through the filter than the stock paper filter and is washable and reusable.

Engine protection and performance enhancement recently got easier for owners of more than 225 models of 2002-2016 Renault Megane, Scenic, Fluence, and Kangoo vehicles, plus the Mercedes-Benz Citan. Clean, free-flowing air is the key to maintaining a small displacement gasoline and diesel engine's ability to accelerate sharply and run dependably -- and the K&N 33-2849 replacement air filter can make that happen.

2002-2016 Renault Megane Air Filter Cleaner

Cleaning your K&N air filter is made easy thanks to the air filter cleaning kit available from K&N.

For their third generation, the family-oriented Megane and sport-centric Scenic, and the light-commercial multipurpose Kangoo and Kangoo Express in their second generation, these popular transporters got upsized and turbocharged powerplants to appeal to their diverse ownership.

In 2012, the Mégane III received three new engines; a 1.2L turbocharged gasoline engine, a new 110 hp version of the 1.5L dCi engine, and a new 1.6L engine. In 2014, a more powerful 128-hp version of the 1.2L, plus a 220-hp version of the 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine became available. The Kangoo also has a number of engine choices, and the K&N 33-2849 fits the 1.2L D gasoline and the 1.5L L4 diesel -- effectively widening the range of uses for these cars. All of these and others can be fitted with the 33-2849 replacement air filter for a boost in horsepower and increased engine air flow.

Designed and engineered to perform at peak efficiency for up to 50,000 miles, depending on driving conditions, before cleaning is needed, the panel-shaped, rectangular 33-2849 can be dropped directly into the factory air box with no special tools required.

Made of multiple layers of oiled cotton gauze and mounted in a sturdy polyurethane frame, the K&N replacement air filter allows more air to reach the intake than a thicker, denser paper filter. Tests performed by an independent laboratory commonly known as the Frazier Permeability Test have shown that the medium used in K&N air filters flows more than 300-percent more air than paper air filter medium when compared on a square-inch per square-inch basis.

It is recommended that air filters be checked every 30,000 miles and replaced, or in K&N's case, washed every 50,000 miles, but depending on driving conditions, they can be serviced more frequently. By comparison, paper filters need to be replaced about every 15,000 miles. Mathematically speaking, if the Renault is driven 150,000 miles and a disposable filter bought and installed every 15,000 miles, there could be up to 10 disposable air filters going into a landfill.

K&N High Flow Air Filter

The K&N 33-2849 replacement air filter can help increase horsepower and acceleration in a range of Renault Megane-based normally aspirated and turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, and is available worldwide.

Cleaning is a straightforward process made easier with the 99-5000 filter care service kit. After removing the filter, spray it with Power Kleen and rinse it in running water. Let it air dry completely, then re-oil with air filter oil and reinstall. Saving money and saving the planet can be done at the same time and this filter should last the life of the vehicle, and it is backed by the K&N 10-Year/Million-Mile Limited Warranty.

The World's Best Air Filter has worldwide availability and Renault owners from the UK to Saudi Arabia have recommended it in online reviews. To find one that fits your model, use K&N's online Search by Vehicle tool. When you are ready to purchase, locate an authorized K&N dealer near you by using the K&N Dealer Search Tool.

Custom 1932 Ford Roadster Build Becomes a Huge Hobby for Retiree Gary Barnard

1932 Ford three-window coupe

The body of the car weighs 350 pounds so it was hard for Barnard to move it around in his garage during construction. Dillon Lange from Riverside, California did the Viper red paint job.

Gary Barnard, 64-year old resident of Moreno Valley, California, is a car builder, of sorts. Unlike restoring cars, custom-built cars are mostly made from scratch. In other words, very little about the car ever existed before construction starts on it.  You can say that it comes straight from the imagination of the builder.

crate small block Chevrolet engine

A crate small block Chevrolet engine with a bunch of modifications powers the car and generates more than 300 horsepower.

Barnard has been constructing cars for about five or six years. However, he has been involved with cars most of his life.

“My older brother and I went to drag races and we got really involved in it,” he said. “During that time I got to know a lot of guys involved in racing real well. When these guys were getting to retirement age they went into building street rods and that’s how I got into building.”

He collected a lot of experience building cars working for Dan Gurney right after high school. “They trained me to build cars and motorcycles,” he said. “I built Indy Cars and AMA dirt track motorcycles. I built those things for five or six years, then I left and became a land surveyor.”

Barnard constructed the aluminum hood side and side vent grilles himself.

Barnard constructed the aluminum hood side and side vent grilles himself.

He was a surveyor for 37 years, but he also did fabrication work as a hobby at his home. He’s retired now, but continues to build cars in his garage. Originally, a hobby, it has now become a fulltime gig.

Barnard noted that he has constructed three custom cars in recent years –- a 1932 Ford three-window coupe and two ‘32 roadsters.

The 3-window is his pride and joy and he doesn’t intend to sell it. He drives the car on weekends, to Bakersfield, California twice a year to participate in hot rod shows, a distance of about 500 to 600 miles; and he also drives to Orange County, California quite a bit, which is a distance of 50 or 60 miles.

His experience constructing cars helped to make this Blue Oval project somewhat of an easy undertaking.

“I already knew what I wanted it to look like,” he said. “It’s fenderless and has three windows. I stretched out the wheelbase 3-inches so it rides a little better.”

Coilover brackets were added to the Ford 9-inch rear end to give the ’32 a unique suspension and stance

Coilover brackets were added to the Ford 9-inch rear end to give the ’32 a unique suspension and stance.

He added that he attends car shows to get some ideas.

He got the frame dimensions from Wescott Fiberglass, and then he started the project by laying out the chassis on a piece of plywood. He then created the dimensions of the car by setting up stamped form frame rails he purchased from ASC around it, and then built a jig. He included a Super Bell 4-inch drop axle and added coilover brackets to it as well as coilover brackets to the narrowed 9-inch rearend. He filled the rearend with Dutchman 31 spline axles and a nodular Iron positraction third member.

“I wanted to make the suspension different and that’s what has attracted a lot of attention,” he said.

He also made the aluminum hood sides and side vent grills. He sells the vents to anyone who wants a set.

The car also features a small block Chevrolet crate engine from GM Performance Parts. “I left the engine relatively stock, but I wanted to boost the horsepower a bit. The engine generated 290 horsepower. I improved that by pulling out the cam and replacing it with a Lunati cam, lifters, and springs, Edelbrock manifold and carburetor, and Mallory UniLite distributor. It runs real good and generates more than 300 horsepower,” he said. Sitting atop the Edelbrock carburetor is a K&N E-3471 air filter to finish off the clean look of the engine.

His garage can accommodate three and a half cars. So it’s big enough to host the tools and machinery he needs to manufacture parts. The work area includes a lathe, disc mill grinders, hydraulic tube bender, two TIG welders, two drill presses, and cutoff saws.

If he doesn’t have the proper tool or machine to make a part, he knows people who build AMA dirt bikes in Costa Mesa, California who can help. “They have a full machine shop I can use, but I haven’t had to except once or twice when my lathe capacity wasn’t big enough. Other than that, I do everything in my garage,” he said.

Getting parts that he didn’t build was not a problem, explained Barnard.  “Being in Southern California I have access to pretty much all that stuff. However, 90 percent of the parts I used I bought online. I selected parts from manufacturers I know. Having been involved in this in some way or another for so many years, I know what is good stuff.  Most of the streetcar stuff that’s good is racecar oriented.”

The wheels come from American Torqthrust and the tires are B.F. Goodrich.

The wheels come from American Torqthrust and the tires are B.F. Goodrich.

“Most of the stuff I tried my best to make instead of buying,” he added. “I discovered that 95 percent of the stuff you buy at street rod shops is expensive. I can make the parts myself for one-tenth the cost. It is really cheap to build a car if you do everything yourself.”

“I did the interior myself. Upholstery that had to be sewn –- armrests and one-piece headliner -- was done by a local upholstery shop,” Barnard added.

He only confronted two problems –- moving the car around the garage as he was building it and installing the air conditioner.

“The body of the car alone weighs about 350 pounds, so it was hard for me to move it by myself. The air conditioner was a problem because the console of the car is thin and includes all the controls. I didn’t realize that since the air conditioner’s controls had to be put into the console, the unit and the console had to go into the car at the same time. The air conditioner is real big and bulky and it had to go in right under the dash. It turned out that if the air conditioner was a half-inch longer one way or the other, it wouldn’t have fit in the car and I would have had to start all over again.”

According to Barnard, construction of the 32 Ford took more than two years. “The body was tied up for six months getting painted by an auto body shop. Except for that, it took about one and a half years to build,” he concluded.

Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Chrysler 300 V8s with K&N Blackhawk Induction System Get Real HP

K&N Blackhawk Induction air intake system for the 2014 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300c

A 2014 Dodge Challenger produced an estimated 14.13 hp more with a K&N Blackhawk Kit.

Production of the first gen-3 Hemi engine began in June 2002, reviving a name and a design concept that has had three lives so far. The first was in the 1950s when almost every version of Chrysler vehicle, including DeSoto, Dodge, and Plymouth, had their own version of the engine (though none used the Hemi name, which Chrysler later trademarked). The second generation was intended to be solely a race engine for NASCAR, but then NASCAR got wise and told all the automakers that any engines they entered had to be available on production cars. Thus the street Hemi legend was born. By 1971, inability to meet emissions requirements and its rather thirsty fuel requirements ended the reign of gen-2.

K&N Blackhawk Induction air intake system for the 2014 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300c installed in engine bay shot

This air intake is easy to install using the factory mounting points and common hand tools.

The first 5.7 liter third generation Hemi produced up to 350 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 375 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm — which is one horsepower per cubic inch, just like the Hemis of the 1950s. The second version of the 5.7 Gen 3 rose to 390 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of torque in the Dodge Ram — 375 horsepower in the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T (with manual transmission) though power varied by the vehicle in which the motor was installed. Now K&N helps give these engines a boost in horsepower thanks to the 71-1542 Blackhawk Induction air intake system.

The generation 3 cast iron block has a hefty deep-skirt design, with a crankshaft supported by four bolts per main bearing (two vertical, two horizontal). The heads are aluminum, while the intake manifold is molded from plastic for reduced weight and increased airflow. The combustion chamber features two spark plugs – just like the top fuel engines based on the gen-2 Hemi.

Chrysler made various revisions to the 5.7L for the 2009 model year. The first for all applications is what Chrysler calls Variable Camshaft Timing or VCT. VCT uses an oil control valve which either advances or retards camshaft timing. Other upgrades include higher compression ratio pistons, cylinder heads that offered better airflow, and an active intake manifold that switches from long runners to short runners by moving a flapper door, emphasizing torque at low engine speeds shifting to delivering horsepower as engine speeds increase.

The Hemi was also available in a 6.1L version for SRT-8 applications. The engine block is different from the 5.7L, with revised coolant channels and oil jets to cool the pistons. A forged crankshaft, lighter pistons, and strengthened connecting rods provide the ability to rev higher and longer. A cast aluminum intake manifold is tuned for high-RPM power and does not include variable-length technology. This engine produces 425 hp at 6200 rpm.

Both the 5.7L and 6.1L Hemi are great engines, however, they are no Hellcat. You can make up a little of the horsepower difference with the 71-1542 K&N Blackhawk performance cold air intake kit. The replacement air induction system boosts horsepower and acceleration to your 5.7L or 6.1L Hemi. In fact, K&N’s own dyno testing has demonstrated an estimated 14.13 hp on a 2014 5.7L Dodge Challenger.

This is possible because the low restriction air intake allows your engine to breathe easier than it can from the OEM air intake. More air means more power and acceleration. One of the features of this Blackhawk induction system is that it includes black components including a K&N high-flow synthetic air filter and powder coated heat shield. The air intake tube is a textured black powder-coated tube featuring an engraved K&N logo for a clean look. The intake tube has accommodations for the inlet air temperature sensor and crank case vent hose.

The oversized cone filter of the 71-1542 system is made of non-oiled synthetic filter media. This type of construction not only allows for increased airflow, but at the same time offers excellent filtration characteristics to ensure long engine life. Often OEM and less-expensive filters are made from more restrictive paper media. Each design is verified through K&N’s dedicated filtration testing lab, which adheres to ISO 5011 standards, ensuring that K&N filters provide high airflow while maintaining excellent engine protection.

And once you’ve installed your K&N filter, you’ve eliminated the need to buy another air filter for the life of your vehicle. The only maintenance is a service you can do yourself easily in your driveway. The filter only needs to be serviced at intervals of 100,000 miles under normal highway driving conditions, by using the K&N Air Filter Cleaning Kit. Your one K&N air filter is designed to last for the lifetime of your vehicle, which K&N guarantees will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement. 2010, 2011 & 2012 RAM 2500/3500 6.7L Diesel with K&N Air Intake System Gets Serious HP Boost

57-1562 performance air intake system for specific 2010-2012 Dodge RAM 2500/3500

The 57-1562 performance air intake system for specific 2010-2012 Dodge RAM 2500/3500 trucks is designed to smooth and straighten airflow to the Cummins 6.7L turbo diesel.

By Dodge's declaration, when it spun RAM Trucks into its own division in 2010, the fourth-generation 2500 and 3500 model pickups were intended for serious customers and mid- to heavy-weight commercial use. Some were still badged Dodge RAM, and sold as such in addition to the RAM. Standard power was the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel with a six-speed manual transmission. The optional 6-speed automatic had 150 lb-ft more torque and was immediately popular. Their new look borrowed heavily from long-haul tractors, which also boosted their appeal. Chassis cabs were available for custom beds in the 3500, and regular cab, crew cab, and mega cabs were available for both the 2500 and 3500 models. The cherry on top was the Heavy Duty model receiving Motor Trend magazine's 2010 Truck of the Year award.

The bottom line became: if you're a real trucker, not an enthusiast/recreational weekender, you have a diesel RAM. Period. A RAM with the 6.7L inline-6 turbocharged Cummins diesel engine generates 350hp and 800lb-ft of torque. You can haul up to 3,100 lb, tow up to 15,000 lb, and traverse tough terrain. If you have a 3500, you also have an engine brake (cylinder compression-release) to announce your arrival upon deceleration. You don't mess around.

K&N 57-1562 performance air intake system installed in 2010-2012 Dodge RAM 2500/3500

The system comes with a chrome-tipped K&N air filter and a uniquely shaped air box, custom manufactured for the 2010-2012 Dodge RAM pickup.

A large-displacement, turbocharged engine is essentially a giant air pump, and making the extra effort to reduce restriction in the induction system will help improve airflow, and enhance performance. And for the 2010-2012 model year 2500s and 3500s, owners now have the opportunity to give this hard-working power plant the advantage of more power and better air induction with the new K&N 57-1562 performance air intake system.

The K&N 57-1562 air intake system for these specific 2010-1012 models replaces the factory air intake housing with a custom air box housing. A K&N diesel air intake kit will significantly reduce intake tract restriction and enable an engine to breathe easier; resulting in more power. It incorporates a large, oversized conical-shaped, high-flow, oiled-cotton air filter, which is then attached to a rotationally molded tube made from interlaced high density polyethylene (HDPE). This roto-molded manufacturing method allows the tube to be precisely shaped for turbulence reduction and airflow acceleration, and to fit precisely into the vehicle's engine compartment while still using factory holes and mounting points. The uniquely shaped air box pulls cooler, outside air, near the bumper, into the custom molded intake for a guaranteed increase in horsepower. This new system will improve engine sound and the tube accommodates the factory mass airflow sensor and air temperature sensor.

Air filter 99-5000 is washable and reusable for the K&N 57-1562 air intake

The air filter used in the K&N 57-1562 air intake is washable and reusable and can be serviced with the 99-5000 filter care service kit.

K&N dynamometer tests using a stock 2011 Dodge RAM 2500, with the Cummins 6.7 running at 2919 rpm in third gear, showed an estimated increase of 8.2 horsepower and 12.8 lb-ft of torque.

Consistent with K&N's engineering and manufacturing philosophy, the oversized cone shaped cotton gauze air filter is washable, reusable, and can be in place for up to 100,000 miles before servicing, depending on driving conditions. It can easily be washed more frequently if needed, and K&N provides a cleaning care kit for that. Also, the 57-1562 intake is relatively easy to install using basic hand tools, and is backed by K&N’s 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty.

The following Dodge RAM and RAM pickups can be fitted with the K&N 57-1562 Performance Intake Kit:
