The win came down to the last race and Alden won by 20 points. On the
first day of the two day event, Alden finished 3rd, and on Sunday he finished
11th. “In SuperKart USA the rules allow you to throw out your two worst finishes
and count the top eight,” said Dan Alden, of Alden Racing. “My brother, Harry
was in the top three almost every race this season and came in first for three
races. We were able to throw out Sunday’s points.”
This is Alden’s 3rd championship in the Eastern Division. “We hit speeds of
120-125 mph, and have a 6 speed sequential gear box,” said Alden. “We shift them
like an Indy car.”

Race day at the O’Reilly Fall Nationals at Dallas, Texas was tough for Phil
Burkart and his Checker Schuck’s Kragen Team. Burkart wanted to experience a
calm and steady qualifying effort, and power past his opponents on race day.
Instead, he and the CSK Team spent two days dealing with qualifying drama and
then had to live through a first round battle that took place behind a smoke
screen.
On Friday, Burkart imitated everyone else in the Funny Car class by
failing to make a full lap during the first qualifying effort. His opening shot,
5.014, was good enough for the No. 6 spot.
Burkart and his crew use K&N Engineering’s Premium Performance Gold Oil Filters.
“The thick canister walls on the K&N Filters have extra strength and
durability,” he said. “It reduces the risk of damage from debris on the race
track.”
Phil Burkart's CSK Crew
Burkart smoked his tires during a Friday night session which featured a
number of stout runs. He went into Saturday in the No.15 spot.
Saturday’s first run came after a brief but heavy downpour and Burkart made his
first full pull of the event, clocking in with a steady 5.014. The CSK Team had
a solid baseline for tuning but Burkart’s teammate, Del Worsham, was still
behind him on the sheet.
“It’s not a good feeling to be the second pair in the final session, knowing
your teammate and boss needs to bump you out,” said Burkart. “When it’s someone
else behind you, it’s hard not to hope they don’t make it, but when it’s Del
doing the bumping, you have to hope he does it. Then, we’d just have to come
right back and bump our way back in. It was a pretty simple concept, and we did
it.”
Worsham’s 4.93 was enough to bump Burkart out, but seconds later the Havoline
Chevy posted a strong 4.891 and Burkart was back in. In the end, both teammates
were part of the race on Sunday.
Burkat landed in the No. 13 spot and had to face a much quicker car in round
one. That car was piloted by Tony Pedregon, who qualified 4th with a 4.812.
At the start, Burkart’s machine lurched forward and then almost immediately went
up in tire smoke. His crew’s view was obscured behind the line with the “white
wall” which hides the race car, and usually means a loss.
“We saw tire smoke, figured we were dead ducks and began to walk away,” said CSK
Co-Crew Chief Marc Denner. “I heard pedaling going on, but I figured it was Phil
giving chase even though Tony was pulling away. I looked over and saw both cars
in tire spoke. Tony was way out on us, but it looked like he was dead in the
water. Phil was closing in fast, but ran out of room.”
“It went up in smoke as I hit the throttle,” said Burkart. “When I hit again, I
saw Tony’s tire smoke, and even though we were way behind, I know how much these
cars can make up if the tires hook back up again. I think I pedaled the car six
times, but it would never hook up and all I could do was blaze it down there.”

Richie Harrison of Harrison Brothers racing returned to the sport he loves at
Cadwell Park in the UK for the first time since 2005. Harrison suffered a broken
pelvis, sternum, fractured hip and bruising to the lungs at Brands Hatch more
than one year ago.
“It’s been a long time coming but I finally made it back to the race track at
the Derby Phoenix MCC’s last meeting of the year,” Harrison wrote. “I had very
specific goals and they weren’t to beat a certain time or finish a certain
position but mainly to enjoy my first ride back after 18 months away from
racing. I wanted to ride comfortably but more importantly I did not want to end
up back in the hospital because of a mistake.”
Richie Harrison of Harrison Brothers Racing
The conditions were very damp at the first practice session and Harrison said
his nerves were jangling a bit. He completed Saturday’s races on his Formula
600CC Championship onboard the HBR 2000 Yamaha R6.
“On Sunday, I was determined to have a good solid end of the day,” he wrote.
“But, we were told that all races after dinner would be 10 laps instead of 7,
and I wondered how well I would stand up to the full race distance with my
fitness being still somewhat lacking in comparison to normal after my injuries.
I took to the track and thought just do what you have done, have fun and go home
safe. I passed a number of riders and settled into a good rhythm. By mid-race I
made a few slight errors and had to tell myself to concentrate at one of the
most demanding tracks in the country. I put my head down to set the fastest lap
of the whole weekend on the last flying lap which was 1 minute 43.7 seconds.”
Harrison took 15th at the checkered flag but gained two points. “If anyone would
have said that on my return to racing on a new unfamiliar bike that I would have
grabbed two points, I would have been hard pushed to agree,” he said. “But I
managed it and more importantly I stayed safe and rode well within my limits and
enjoyed myself.”
Richie Harrison’s brother Jonathan finished the Dynapro Minitwins Championship
in 3rd place. Harrison Brothers Racing uses K&N products on their vehicles. “We
run K&N Air and Oil Filters on our vehicles,” said Harrison. “K&N products allow
our machines to breathe and aids in our torque.”
Harrison plans to race at the next two Auto 66 Club Meetings at Elvington Park
near York on October 1st.

There is only one race left in the Mike’s Transmission Southern California Top
Comp Series and for one racer it is a chance to win. Jonathan Fiello drives a
2003 undercover dragster with a 635 cubic inch big block Chevrolet and is third
in overall points.
Fiello’s won his most recent race at California Speedway in Fontana, California.
“It took five rounds to win,” said the K&N Engineering Process Design Engineer.
“It was my first race after being off for three months. I had to miss two races
in the series, if I was able to participate in every race I’d be at the top in
points.”
Fiello Racing
The racers went 1/8 mile instead of ¼ mile because of high winds. In round
three Fiello had a .020 reaction time, 4660 @ 148 mph on a 4.65 dial in; round
four was a .011 reaction time, 4627 @ 149 mph on a 4.63 dial in and in round
five .016 reaction time 4.630 @ 151 mph on a 4.62 dial in.
Fiello uses K&N’s valve covered breather filters, K&N nozzle filters (E-3003)
and K&N’s big block Chevy oil filters. Fiello said he would highly recommend K&N
Products and use them if he did not work for K&N Engineering. “E-3003
keeps small contaminates out of my fuel injectors,” he said.

“My car’s performance was awesome,” said Fiello. “I thought I would be
rusty when I got back in the drivers seat. With my second pass it felt like I
was right back where I belonged.”

knowledge that goes into every product sold. K&N’s products, such as their Air Filters, are designed by

The Opel Astra G is competitive in its class when it comes to steering, handling
and holding its own on the road. It is 13' 6" long, 6'6" wide and weighs upwards
of 1,079kg. K&N Engineering has released a new 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-4900TS) for
the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 Opel Astra G 1.8L L4.
Typhoon Air Intake System for 2000 to 2005 Opel Astra G
K&N dynamometer test show a 6 horsepower gain for this
silver intake. "It is a straight forward design," said K&N Air Filter Product
Manager Joost Adriaans. "We spent a lot of time making satisfying horsepower
gains, by testing the air flow paths. A 6 horsepower gain is good considering
this 1.8L engine only cranks out 103 horsepower at the wheels."
The design of this vehicle played a major role in the development of this
69-Series Kit. "There was not a whole lot of room in the engine bay," said
Adriaans. "We designed this K&N Kit (69-4900TS) so the K&N Replacement Filter
(RC-9350) is placed on top of the engine, where the original air box was. The Opel Astra also has a better throttle response with the K&N Typhoon Air Intake."
With all K&N 69-Series Typhoon Air Intakes there is a thorough development
procedure which requires the use of multiple test vehicles. "The Opel Astra is
one of the best selling cars in Europe," Adriaans said. "Finding donor vehicles
was not a problem."
