Sportsman Racers from K&N Engineering Compete at NHRA SPORTSnationals

The NHRA Pacific SPORTsnationals presented by K&N Engineering was a three-day event at California Speedway in Fontana. More than 400 drivers in eight categories competed for points leading to NHRA national titles and a share of $50,000 at Auto Club Dragway.

The SPORTSnationals highlight NHRA sportsman categories. Some of the best Sportsman racers in the West will gather for Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street along with the divisions Top Comp and Super Eliminator. K&N's Steve Williams, Bob Harris, Jonathan Fiello and Tom Brown raced in the SPORTSnationals.

Tom Brown competes in Competition Eliminator in the F/ED (F/Econo Dragster) class. He drives a 2005 Custom 195” wheel base dragster. “I qualified 15th out of 28 cars,” said Brown. “In the first round of eliminations I had to race against the number five qualifier. He had problems and I was able to win that round. During the second round I faced the number 26 qualifier and I was able to out run him to get the win light. In the third round I faced the number eight qualifier, and lost due to a bad light and not enough performance.”

Brown went out on the Thursday prior to the SPORTSnationals to test a new motor combination. It did not go as well as planned. They were able to make four test runs, but the motor let go on the last one. “We had some work to change motors for the rest of the event,” said Brown. “With our old reliable motor in the car, we ran numbers that we had anticipated.” Brown’s father, Gene Brown built the engine. The car is equipped with a K&N Intake Scoop (100-8505). “We saw an immediate change in the air/fuel ratio the first time we ran with the scoop,” said Brown. “There was more air flow to the carburetors.”

K&N’s Jonathan Fiello drives a 2003 Undercover 4-link dragster in the Top Comp class. It has a 638 cubic inch fuel injected big block Chevrolet. “Knowing I’m at the track representing the race sponsor is an honor,” said Fiello. “I feel like there are more eyes on me and this drives me to do better. It also helps with potential and existing customers when questions come up about K&N Products.”

Brown’s best run of the weekend was an 8.527 @ 153.40 mph. “For qualifying in the bottom half of the field, going three rounds of competition is a really good weekend of racing,” said Brown. “The Lucas Oil Divisional Event in Las Vegas is the next race for us.”

K&N’s Jonathan Fiello took second place in a close final round in the Top Comp class. “It felt great to make it to the final but it was heart breaking when I lost,” said Fiello. “It felt as if I was punched in the gut. My dragster (2003 Undercover 638cubic inch fuel injected big block Chevy) ran great. It was consistent all weekend and my reaction times were on the money.”

Fiello uses K&N Oil Filter HP-3002 and K&N’s E-3003. “The K&N Oil Filter is the best in the market and it prevents contaminates from damaging the motor,” he said. “E-3003 covers the fuel injection nozzles and prevents debris from clogging the nozzle. The K&N Products did their job like always.”

At the beginning of the race the track was hot and greasy. “I had to make some adjustments on the car,” said Fiello. “By the middle of the weekend it started to cool down and the track came around. By Sunday the track was awesome. My car did what it was supposed to do and responded to all the adjustments. It was a great weekend and it felt good to do well at a K&N Sponsored event.”

K&N’s Bob Harris drove a 2000 Chevy Corvette. The motor was built at K&N by John Reedy. “I made it through seven rounds,” said Harris. “I lost in the final round. Winning any round is good, winning six and losing one isn’t so bad.”

Steve Williams NHRA career began in 1990. The K&N Vice President of Product Development and Engineering won Division Championships in 1991 and 1998 in Super Comp and Super Gas along with 18 NHRA Career wins. He has compiled 16 semi-final and 4 final round appearances, winning in 2003 at Seattle. At the SPORTSnationals, Williams was eliminated in his 1962 Corvette in the early rounds. “It’s hard to lose at any event,” said Williams. “I have been building a new car and have run a limited schedule.” Williams uses K&N Air and Oil Filters and the K&N Composite Intake Scoop on his vehicles,

2006 through 2010 PT Cruiser Gains 7 Horserpower with K&N Air Intake System

Chrysler PT Cruisers are powered by a 2.4-liter, twin-cam four-cylinder engine. In base, Touring and Limited versions, the engine is tuned to deliver 150 horsepower. Updated in 2006, the PT Cruisers have new front and rear sheet metal, a new front grille, new headlamps and fog lamps and a body color spoiler.

K&N Engineering, Inc. has made a 63 Series AirCharger Intake Kit (57-1550) for the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4 liter non turbo.

K&N test have shown a horsepower gain of 7.17 at 5004 RPM with the 57-1550 Air Intake. "We were able to get such good horsepower because the original factory airbox is restrictive," said K&N Performance Kit Technical Development Supervisor Kirk Swanson. "We designed the heat shield around the existing parts in the engine compartment for a nice tight fit."

K&N's 57-1550 rotationally molded polyethylene Intake system uses a conical shaped High-Flow Carbon Top Air Filter (RP-4660) that fits into the stock location. "The heat shield isolates the filter element from the engine heat," said Swanson. "It helps keep a cooler air charge going into the engine. We used a carbon top on the filter to add to the appeal of the PT Cruiser. It's a very straight forward installation."

Phil Burkart Adds Points at Torco Racing Fuels Nationals

Phil Burkart ran his Havoline/Checker, Schuck’s, Kragen Chevy at Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond in the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals.

The drag racer struggled in qualifying, but in the end he and his team came through with a clutch performance during their final shot. On Friday, tire trouble hit during the evening session. The air was dry and brisk in Virginia and it was tough to get the right settings on the engine. Burkart went into Saturday knowing he and his team needed to turn things around.

“The air was unbelievable, but in a lot of ways that made it harder on the tuners and the drivers,” said Burkart. “The front half of this track was fine, but from half-track on it was loose, and it stayed that way most of the weekend. When the air helps you make this much power, but the track does not cooperate, you head off into turning territory that’s not all that comfortable.”

There was pressure on Saturday, but Burkart drove to a clean 4.983 during the first session. That was not good enough to bump into the top 16, but it gave Co-Crew Chiefs Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner a better shot at delivering the goods on the final shot.

“Getting in the on the final pass is never a good thing,” Burkart said. “It dosen’t mater if you’re absolutely 100 percent sure the tune-up is right, because any one of a thousand freak things can break or trip you up. We knew we had the right combination in the car to get in, but also knowing we had only one shot to do it and nothing could break, or leak or fall off the car. I was nervous.”

Cunningham, Denner and the blue crew tuned the car correctly, bolted everything on securely and sent Burkart on his way to a solid 4.882 on his final pass. This put Burkart at the 15th spot in the field.

Burkart and his crew use K&N Engineering’s Premium Performance Gold Oil Filters. The thick canister walls on the K&N Filters have extra strength and durability which reduce the risk of damage from debris on the race track.

Burkart and crew waited to see who would eventually land in the No.2 spot and fill the other half of his first round match-up. Robert Hight landed at No. 2.

When the crew went to the track early Sunday, Team CSK scraped ice off their vehicle windshields and faced temperatures in the 30s and planned for a rematch with Hight.

“I expected to run against somebody huge, because that’s what happens when you’re 15th,” said Burkart. “Those guys are in the hunt for the championship, so you know they weren’t planning on letting us take them out again, but I still felt like we had enough in it to shock them.”

After the tree flashed amber, Burkart left first. His standard superb light (this time .058) was nearly twice as quick as Hight’s reaction. Hight pulled away soon after both cars passed the 60-foot timer, and when Burkart’s car faded toward the centerline, Hight tore away for the finish line.

Toward the 330 mark, tire smoke and a blower explosion hit almost simultaneously. “I hit the pedal and it jacked the blower right off the motor,” said Burkart. “That was it. We lost and we broke a lot of stuff.”

Burkart added another 31 points to his 2006 total in Richmond.

2006 Rallycross Season Ends Early for Junior Driver

Liam Harrison is the UK’s front running Junior Rallycross driver. Unfortunately, Harrison was forced to end his 2006 season early, after breaking his arm in a hockey game.

Harrison started the season well with a string of podium finishes in the BRDA, BTRDA and MDA Rallycross Championships. He was on a course for a top five finish in the three championships.

Harrison had his cast removed, but the doctor recommended giving it lots of time to heal properly. “Liam’s disappoint is an understatement,” said Rob Harrison, Liam’s father. “Missing the final few races of the season are sadly unavoidable.”

Liam Harrison will be 17 at the end of October and this means he will graduate into one of the senior racing categories. He has options available in 2007.

“I will return again next season and we are close to announcing what class we’ll be racing in,” said Liam Harrison. “It will be a big change from the Junior Mini’s. That category provided a friendly but competitive crowd of drivers to race against.”

Almost 90 percent of the cars in the MDA Championship circuit are fitted with K&N products, said Ian Burdis of K&N Filters (Europe) Ltd.

Twin Cam Harley Davidson Motorcycle Crowd Gets More Performance from K&N

The RK-Series of Filters put K&N on the map in terms of optimizing horsepower from a production based intake assembly. The RK-3910-1, a Large Capacity, Custom Assembly for Twin Cam Harley Davidson motorcycles is no different. "It has been developed around an oversized K&N High-Flow Air Filter," said Jump. "This assembly (RK-3910-1) boosts performance, service intervals and filtration."

K&N Engineering designed the RK-3910-1 with a powder coated, billet aluminum backing plate, eliminating the external breathers. K&N eliminates the external breathers and makes them internal. This vents the vapors from the crank case into the intake air stream for a nice clean installation. This assembly features a bolted-in, dyno-tuned velocity stack and internal run breathers. The latest edition is designed to get more horsepower and retain the stock appearance for 1999 through 2012 Twin Cam Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. "The custom assembly keeps that factory appearance by utilizing the stock air cleaner cover," said Jump. "The laser etched K&N high-flow insignia sets it apart from the crowd."

"This K&N Kit (RK-3910-1) has a taller air filter for the Harley customers who bore and stroke their motors," said Dennis Mahan, K&N Powersports Business Manager. "If they want more performance they have to have more air. We made this kit specifically for the hopped up bikes and it allows Harley owners to get more air with this taller K&N Filter."

As with all K&N High-Flow Air Filters, the RK-Series Air Filters can be cleaned, re-used and is backed by the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty.

At this time the RK-Series Air Filter Assembly (RK-3910-1) does not fit Twin Cam Engines with the Magnetti-Morelli fuel injection system. The Magnetti-Morelli systems have an oval port and the K&N Kit fits a round port.
