K&N Provides Increased Horsepower and Torque for Twin-Cam Harley-Davidson Motorcycles

Replacement Air Filter for Harley-Davidson® motorcycles
Replacement Air Filter for Harley-Davidson® motorcycles
K&N's RK Series Air Intake Systems are designed to get more horsepower from your Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. These air intake systems replace the stock air filter and backing plate with an oversized K&N Air Filter and custom aluminum backing plate. K&N's RK Series Air Intake Systems are designed to give you an increase in power and long service intervals.

The RK Series of Air Intake Systems offers increased performance while maintaining a factory appearance. K&N's RK-3910-1 has a custom backing plate that fits onto the stock throttle body or carburetor. This backing plate is made from powder-coated aluminum and dyno-tuned to provide increased performance. This system also includes a tuned velocity stack to help direct airflow into the engine for better performance. Perhaps one of the nicest features of the RK-3910-1 intake system are the oil channels incorporated into the backing plate to direct crankcase vapor and oil from the breather bolts back into the engine.

K&N's RK-3910-1 is the high capacity version of the RK-3909-1 intake system. RK-3910-1 uses a K&N air filter that is 5/8 inches taller than the standard height air filter used in part number RK-3909-1. This translates into increased filtration capacity, longer service intervals, and a larger increase in estimated horsepower.

K&N dynamometer tests show an estimated increase of 10.76 horsepower and 10.85 lbft of torque at 5,206 RPM on a 2010 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy with a 96 cubic inch engine. Results will vary with other models.

Part number RK-3910-1 can be easily installed with basic hand tools in 90 minutes or less and is backed by the K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty®

K&N's RK Series Air Intake, part number RK-3910-1, fits most Twin-Cam Harley-Davidson models from 1999 to 2012, including 2008 to 2012 Softail models. For 2008 to 2012 Touring Model Harley-Davidson motorcycles use part number RK-3930. For 2008 to 2012 Dyna modes, see part number RK-3931. Air intake RK-3910-1 will fit the following vehicle applications:

NHRA Pro Stock Racer Michael Malmgren Ready to Win in 2012

Every few years, Michael Malmgren experiences a race here in the states, but he is most at home at tracks throughout Europe. Racing in the Pro Stock Car class, the driver has many years of experience under his belt. In fact, Malmgren has been racing in the same class for twenty years. Referring to the birth of his passion for Stock Car racing Malmgren said, "I started when I was twenty-two, bringing my 1965, two-door, Oldsmobile Cutlass to the races. I ran it with a tuned up 455, with a tunnel ram manifold and twin carbs. It was pretty cool! After the race, I drove it home again." Times have changed since the driver first lined up on the track. In fact, Malmgren is now manning a Jerry Bickel built Pontiac GTO, loaded with some of the best parts on the market.

Comparing the sport of drag racing in the states and in Europe, the driver continued, "Same format, same rules, same everything; except that a good crowd is maybe forty-thousand spectators in Europe compared to eighty to one-hundred-thousand in the states. The biggest thing is that in the United States, teams are running full-time on a much higher budget and cost mass. By that, they run faster and finesse everything into every last detail. U.S. drivers may make two hundred test drives over the winter, and we maybe get in five or ten runs, tops. We run forty runs during an entire season, and they run four hundred, and in turn have much more experience. That's why we can't come over racing, and try to be competitive. It's just a mission impossible."

Due to adverse winter weather, Malmgren and his fellow competitors stop racing in October and don't get geared back up until May. Although the season is short, that doesn't have a bearing on the passion the drivers share for the sport of drag racing. During 2011 Michael Malmgren competed in all six rounds of the FIA Championship, and is already scheduled to return to the same event during 2012.

Referring to the previous season, Malmgren said, "We were in second place all the way up to the last race, but lost in the second round and fell down to the fourth spot. That was our worst ending in fifteen years. I would not call it (2011 season) a success. We did okay, but not super. We still ran strong at most events. Our team has the best parts and car possible and great support from all of our USA performance parts manufacturers," he continued. "We have a good crew and know what it takes to win."

According to the Pro-Stock driver, his best race of the 2011 season took place at "Hocheheim, in Germany". "Even though we lost in the second round, we ran very good and were the fastest car during the last qualifying session. We beat top dog, Nixon Sunblom, in the first round and had former FIA champion, Jimmy Alund second on the tree, which would be enough to put us in the final round," he explained. "But due to a lost spark plug wire in the burn-out, we had no power to outrun him. We really had a win in the box."

Eager to redeem himself in the 2012 season, Malmgren has already determined what it will take to experience success. Simply put, the driver is confident that he and his team must "work harder". "We need to do our homework better before coming to each race. We have also signed a deal with MBE heads, and together with Bob Ingles, my engine builder, we will have the power it takes to be on the top of the page."

Michael Malmgren and his crew are acutely aware that success also depends a great deal upon using filters that are capable of keeping the internal components contaminant free while allowing an adequate air flow and high volume of oil to run through their engines. That in mind, they use K&N products.

"Maintenance is very important," explained Malmgren. "Referring to K&N products, he continued, "We use the new hood-scoop and oil filters, as they work best. I also use K&N filters on my motorcycle and BMW car. K&N products are the best out there, and they absolutely have played a role on my success!

When asked what Michael Malmgren fans can expect in 2012, the driver said, "A hungrier driver than ever before. We will be back this year, running in the top!

K&N's David Rampy with Early Season Back-to-Back Finals Starting with NHRA Gator Win

Adding to an already astonishing win record, Piedmont Alabama's David Rampy put his 1989 K&N GT/HA Camaro through the paces to pick up another NHRA Super Stock National Event win, during the 43rd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA GatorNationals at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville, in north central Florida. The feat was just the beginning at what could be an early season championship point's roll for Rampy, as the very next week he drove his Super Stock entry to another final for a runner-up finish during the NHRA JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, Louisiana.

Rampy started off the GatorNationals event by winning the GT/HA class title before setting his sights on the overall Super Stock event championship. This was again an event where Rampy could also be found behind the wheel of his 1932 Bantam which he competes in the ultra-competitive Competition Eliminator class. "Things just didn't work out for that car during this event," he pointed out. "We ended up going out second round in Comp, but things went very well in the Super Stock car."

"You know in the Super Stock car, basically the whole weekend everything went pretty smooth other than having to stay until Monday," he continued. "It wasn't bad, I mean we had some good cars on our side of the ladder. In Super Stock, there are a lot of good racers so it's kinda hard not to."

Rampy made his way past a tough Bob Marshall in round one buy taking just .005 of the stripe and moved on to send Jeff Taylor packing in round two, once again having the better reaction time which forced Taylor under his dial. That would set up an all too familiar match up for Rampy in round three and a heads up run.

"There were only two of us there in GT/HA and the same guy I ran in class, I had to run him in third round," he reflected. After being able to easily outrun Tony Cafaro in his 2002 Firebird during class eliminations, Rampy was looking to being safe on the tree and again turning on the win light in his lane.

"Well, he kinda surprised us," he said of Cafaro. "He went faster than I thought he would, but going in we knew we could go faster than we had been, too. So it ended up not being a problem. We, of course, had to run Jeff Taylor second round, who is a tough competitor and we knew if we got by him, we'd have a heads up the next round that we felt good about and that would give us a bye in round four. So we thought, wow, that's looking pretty good just need to get by Jeff."

"At that point everything was half-way falling into place," he added.

After sending Cafaro to the trailer for the second time during the event, Rampy took his earned bye on Sunday, but would have to wait until Monday to see any more on track action, as once again Mother Nature came along with the dreaded "R" word and forced the event to be put on hold.

Knowing that they had a bye next round, most racers in a situation like this would have been fine with a chance to save it for the next morning and be able to use it as a time run, in what could possibly be all new track and weather conditions than those from the day before. But for a multi-time champion like K&N's David Rampy, he's just all too good at reading whatever conditions that may be thrown at him.

"Luckily the track was pretty much the same," said Rampy of Monday's conditions. "The weather was not a lot different, but we had wind every day and it was from different directions. One time it would be a cross-head, another it would be tail and then the next time it might be a head wind, but a different cross direction to it and that all affects your E.T. and how you dial. The wind was really the main thing that was messing with us."

Rampy just switched to running this 1984 Camaro over the last couple of seasons and comments on how and why the car remains so consistent in lots of different conditions. "It's kind of a middle of the pack kind of car in that it's fast for its class, but not super-fast overall and so it doesn't go out there and blow the tires off and can hook well in a lot of different track conditions. It's just a really good consistent car with a lot of good parts on it that keep it that way, right down to the K&N filters."

Now that Monday morning had rolled around, Rampy met up with Herbie Null in round five. Rampy may have been a little behind on the tree, but used some of those well-honed driving skills to take the stripe by .004 and off to the semi-finals where Jake Sealey tried just a little too hard and turned it red, sending Rampy to the final.

"Well, the final was a lucky round," Rampy explained of the odd scenario that unfolded before the pair staged. "Actually in the semi's, when the car left it just had like a little blip, like it just went ‘pop' for a split second, like a little miss. So I ended up running two over the dial and I thought, well what was that. You know sometimes, these cars will get kinda high [wheels in the air] when they leave and will get the gas away from the jets. We weren't sure if maybe that's all it was or what. I told Barry, all I can do it just dial for that."

"So when I got into the water for the final and went to do the burnout, the car quit," he continued. "It just went dead and I thought, what in the world and starting looking at everything. It had power, since the pump and everything was on. I tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. Todd Ewing, the boy that I actually got the car from, he had won Super Comp and happened to be standing there and he went running back there and they raised the hatch up. He looked down and the wire had come off from the fuel pump to the relay. So he stuck it back on and it started right up. So I did a real quick burnout and shot right to the starting line."

"It was certainly a bit of a panic mode for a while there and I did my best to try to get back to being focused," he said. "When I left the starting line, it didn't stumble. So after the way I had dialed it, I told myself I was breaking out and you gotta get rid of something. So I just went down there and killed it off and luckily, it just worked out."

Even after all the chaos, that can seem to be happening in slow motion to a driver, Rampy still managed to have a decent light, but was .022 behind Joe Teuton Jr., where it just came down to a squeaker at the stripe. Teuton taking too much stripe and going under by just .001, while Rampy, knowing his car well, drove it to a perfect dead-on his dial 10.250 for the GatorNationals Super Stock win.

"You know, we pride ourselves on always getting to the starting line and at least making a race of it," he explained. "And when that was all going down I was thinking, 'No, we can't be in the final of the GatorNationals and the car won't run', but luckily thanks to some help, it all worked out."

With a fresh NHRA Wally in tow, Rampy and his two K&N cars hit the road for the next event on their extensive 2012 schedule the very next weekend in Belle Rose, Louisiana. Where his trusty Comp Eliminator car has not been his friend as of yet for the still young season, his Super Stock Camaro continued to shine.

Rampy worked his way through five tough rounds before earning the all-important bye into his second final in as many races. There he would face, Mike Crutchfield and although neither had a light that one would want to write home about, Rampy still ran his K&N Camaro on his 10.18 dial to just come up short for the victory.

"I just have to thanks Barry for all his help at each race and to the folks who have been with me for a lot of years," Rampy pointed out. "Folks like Steve and Bob at K&N, well you just don't get any better than that. They know and understand what all of us go through as a racer and what we put out cars through to get to these championships. When you get the knowledge that they have and the support that they give through their products that keep us out there round after round, they are a part of this team and we are happy to take K&N to the winner's circle any chance we can."

Pappel Racing is Geared Up for the 2012 NHRA Division Six Drag Racing Season

Ron Appel earned his third consecutive "Night Fire" championship in 2011 and is anticipating the 2012 season.
Ron Appel earned his third consecutive "Night Fire" championship in 2011 and is anticipating the 2012 season.
It's human nature for a parent to be proud of their children's accomplishments, and one can only imagine how a father would gleam with pride if their offspring chose to participate in a sport that they have a passion for. Ron Pappel is in that situation, as he, his daughter, Rochelle, and her older sibling, Jim, all share a passion for and compete in NHRA Division Six drag racing. In fact, the three have been racing as a family for over ten years.

The youngest member of the Pappel Racing team, Rochelle began her racing career driving a junior dragster at the age of eight. Now a senior in high school, Rochelle carries a 3.68 grade point average and has earned a scholarship to Lane Community College, and plans to run track.
The Pappel Racing Team consists of a family of drivers, including Ron Pappel, his daughter, Rochelle, and his son, Jim.
The Pappel Racing Team consists of a family of drivers, including Ron Pappel, his daughter, Rochelle, and his son, Jim.

As a race car driver, Rochelle is equally as successful. During the 2011 season, she raced in the high school and pro classes at Champion Raceway and Woodburn Dragstrip. Rochelle finished the season with two wins and two final round appearances. She also competed in the Hot Rod Nationals, going four rounds in the constellation race. When asked her strong point as a driver, her father said, "Rochelle is "ICE" at the starting line, and has learned to be a stealth competitor at the starting and finish line."

Jim, 24, is also no stranger to success. In fact, the driver raced the Woodland Dragstrip Super Shifter Series during 2011. Manning a 1970 Nova, powered by a 383 cubic-inch engine with a four speed transmission behind it, Jim finished the series third overall for the season. Referring to Jim's driving skills, Ron said, "Jim knows the ins and outs of each car and has experience driving many cars. He has competed for several years in Division Six."

Ron, the patriarch of the team, has set a great example for his youngsters to follow. In fact, he raced Super-Pro in the NHRA Summit Series, the Hot Rod Nationals and the Lucas Oil race at Woodburn Dragstrip during the 2011 season. Ron won the Night Fire race for the third consecutive year at Champion Raceway in Medford, Oregon. "Our family has grown up at the race track, and enjoy the friendly competition atmosphere that is great at every track where we have raced," explained Ron. "Our race team shows fellow racers and fans how much fun team work and competition is in the NHRA."

Ron, Jim and Rochelle Pappel welcome the opportunity to share their passion for and compete in the sport of racing as a family, but are also aware that victories make the overall experience even more enjoyable. "If you want to win races, your vehicle maintenance is crucial in every aspect," explained Ron. "We are able to keep our cars consistent on the track by ensuring that every component does its job the same every time. From air delivery to oil maintenance with K&N filters. You cannot cut corners anywhere if you want to win. We use K&N air filters on our race cars and tow vehicles," he continued. K&N oil and air filters are by far the most reliable and consistent product we have ever used to protect our engines. They have been a part of our race cars and team since we started in 2001. K&N has been proven in our pits and on the track by winning eight track championships, two Division six titles and one national championship."

Fans can plan on seeing "two great looking competitive 27 Ford Roadsters" on the Pappel team in 2012. Ron will man a 1927 Ford Brogie Roadster with a big block Chevy engine, while Jim and Rochelle will debut their new Suncoast Roadster with a 383 cubic-inch stroker engine. "NHRA drag racing is a great sport for families," shared Ron. "I would encourage racers and enthusiasts to get their kids involved. Great sponsors like K&N have helped our Pappel Racing family build memories that will last forever."

Bud Kaeding Wins a Thrilling Sin City Showdown at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

One week after his exciting feature event win in Vegas, Kaeding made his 2012 winged debut with the World of Outlaws.
One week after his exciting feature event win in Vegas, Kaeding made his 2012 winged debut with the World of Outlaws.
"It was a great feeling to get the first win of the year out of the way," said Bud Kaeding after winning the "Sin City Showdown" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Campbell, California, USAC West Coast 360 driver passed leader Ryan Bernal with less than two laps remaining. This was the first round of the USAC versus ASCS series and for his win Kaeding collected the $2,500 jackpot.

At the end of the 2011 season Kaeding was entertaining thoughts about changing his number to two, as he had scored numerous second place finishes to close out his campaign. With his 2012 season opening win in Vegas, Kaeding got the monkey off his back, as he out-dueled Bernal to a crowd pleasing photo finish.
Bud Kaeding started off his 2012 campaign with an impressive win in the "Sin City Showdown" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

As Kaeding stalked the young driver, the red flew on the lap-19, and Kaeding drove around Bernal on the restart to grab the lead. With the white flag waving, Kaeding nearly lost the lead as he got up on two wheels in the first set of turns, nearly opening the door for the hard charging Bernal. The duo had fans on the edge of their seats with a drag race coming out of turn four, but Kaeding held the spot and took home the big check.

"We grabbed the lead on the last lap," added Kaeding. "I entered turn one and two and I biked it up."

After the race a jubilant Kaeding entertained the crowd by spinning impressive donuts into victory lane. "It feels awesome to finally get back in victory lane," said an excited Kaeding. "This car was on a rail in the feature, and rolled around awesome on the top. I almost gave it away on the white flag lap, but luckily we were a little better then Bernal. I can't thank Buster, Ziggy and all my guys for working their tails off."
