The Unusual Rise of Shea Holbrook to the Front of World Challenge Touring Grids

Shea is regarded as a tough competitor and is not known to give up ground easily.

Shea is regarded as a tough competitor and is not known to give up ground easily.

Few of us can point to the exact moment when our life turned around 180 degrees. And even fewer of us have had it happen in the passenger seat of a car someone else was driving. But that’s exactly what happened to 15 year old Shea Holbrook.

Moving into the top-level Touring Class of World Challenge has suited Shea well.

Moving into the top-level Touring Class of World Challenge has suited Shea well.

A promising young competitive water skier in her native state of Florida, she was given a ride in one of the Richard Petty Experience Sprint Cup replicas around Daytona International Speedway by a program instructor. Before she had even unbelted herself from the car in pit lane, Shea knew she that wanted to become a professional race car driver.

The move from water skiing to auto racing isn’t as unlikely a move as you might think. Both emphasize control at speed, optimizing weight transfer, and controlling the interface between the ski and water or four tires and asphalt.

All of the vehicles in this photo has a K&N air filter on it and most have oil filters too. Shea even runs K&N fuel filters on her race rig.

So with the help of her parents, together they built her first race car in the family garage, and in 2009 had won the Central Florida Class H1 championship. In 2010, she went into the SCCA World Challenge series where she finished sixth. In 2011, Shea won the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, only the second female driver to win a World Challenge Touring Car race.

For 2012, not only did she record her best finish in World Challenge (fourth), but she began to attract the attention of the media. Shea was made a member of the all-female TRUECar Racing Women Empowered Initiative, while Honda Canada made her the star of one of its TV commercials. She was even featured in an article in Teen Vogue, sharing with young women the infinite possibilities open to them.

Shea Racing wears its K&N logo with pride, using the company’s products on its race cars and tow vehicles.

In 2013, Shea finished seventh in the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car B class, and then moved to the faster A class for 2014, when she finished second overall. She was also the subject of a national TV commercial for sponsor TRUECar.

For 2015, Shea was forced to operate on a shoestring as TRUECar had dropped their program prematurely. Despite the fact that she was only able to compete in four World Challenge TCA races, she still managing to record three top five finishes.

Shea Racing is returning full force, fill-time to the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge Touring car championship -- the first time since 2012. The team is campaigning a pair of Honda Accords V6’s with Shea Holbrook, 6-time PWC winner s back into a Touring Car number 67 joined by the 2015 Trans Am TA3 “Rookie of the Year,” Jason Fichter in car number 7. Shea currently sits a very competitive third in points after eight of 19 races, and Shea Racing occupies third in the team championship, thanks in part to the seventh place in standings held down by Jason Fichter.

And while Shea Racing uses K&N oil and fuel filters on its tow rig, and K&N’s high performance oil filter on its race cars, it’s the K&N air intake about which Shea is most enthused “We use the K&N 69-1212TS Typhoon air intake which guarantees us an increase in power before we ever tune.” In fact, in K&N’s own chassis dyno tests, the installation of a 69-1212TS on an otherwise stock Honda Accord increased power by 7.43 horsepower.

Not surprising Shea is a K&N fan. That first high-speed ride was in a Petty Experience car equipped with a K&N air filter.

Paul Summers 1969 Chevy Nova with a LS7 427 Lives to Fight Another Day

50 Years ago, if you had boasted to your friends about buying a brand new Chevy Nova, they might have laughed at you, and shrugged you off while getting into their Camaro, Charger, or Mustang. Well, as the great Bob Dylan once said, "the times, they are a changin'." And so they have.

These days, the Chevy Nova, also called the Chevy II, is one of the most sought after cars for restoration projects. The Nova dates all the way back to 1962 - the year of the Tiger - and with a 327ci motor and 4-speed manual transmission option, the Nova was no kitten.

Currently the most sought after Chevy Novas are the 68-74 models, bearing the classic "muscle car" look. These came with a multitude of engine options, ranging from a 153ci 2.5L inline-four, all the way to a 402ci 6.6L V8, and almost anything in between. It also had a variety of available transmissions, with the 2-speed Powerglide and 4-speed Borg-Warner T-10 manual as an option. Some Novas even came off the assembly line with disc brakes, to stop all the power behind them. A popular option was the 4-barrel 300 hp 5.7L setup with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic 350 (THM350)

An E-3770 6 x 14-inch round K&N air cleaner sits atop the powerful 427ci LS7.

Paul Summers, of Claremont, California, had a similar idea in mind when he bought his 1969 Chevy Nova, although the 350ci motor wasn't going to cut it for him. He sought the definitive power of the Chevy LS7. "I bought the car in 2013," Paul says, "my goal was to have a street car that ran high 9s on the strip." He got what he wished for - a robust Nova that had power, style, and a beautiful paintjob done by Gage Motorsports in Arlington, Washington.

Paul moved to Southern California in 2014 and began to show interest in the wealth of car shows that SoCal has to offer. He began to show off the enhancing qualities of the car, like the black and red Kirkey race seats and the Art Morrison cage with G-Forge 5-point seat belts. The aforementioned LS7 features L92 heads, Doug's headers, and a Flowmaster exhaust to let the LS7 roar. It's also fitted with Aluminum Champion wheels wrapped in Mickey-Thompson tires contributing to the smooth look and feel of this car. Paul's drivetrain consists of an Inland Empire Driveline driveshaft and a Mark Williams 4.11 ring and pinion. The Nova is also equipped with a Santuff 4-Link coilover suspension setup, to make sure the handling is excellent.

The classic 427 badges let everyone know what's under the hood!

Needless to say, Paul definitely has a great taste in highly customized cars and enthusiasts at the many car shows he attended agreed. He was prosperous in winning multiple trophies including 25 best-of-show awards amongst numerous car shows in Southern California. Paul also won the Super Chevy Editor's Pick award at the 2016 Grand National Roadster Show and took home a trophy from the Street Machine Muscle Car Nationals. Trophies were great, however something was missing, his need for speed. He started taking his car to the local drag strips and proceeded to run low 10s at around 120 mph. One day, he was able to make a 10.20 pass at 128 MPH but the rear end concluded his session quickly when it gave out, thus pretzeling the driveshaft, and cracking the transmission case in the process. He replaced the rear-end with a Mark Williams 40-Spline and had the transmission rebuilt. While the car was indisposed, Paul decided to take off the stock front-end and replace it with an all new tube chassis chromoly front end. He is now ready to hit the track again, and test out his new and better than before 1969 Chevy Nova.

The car is now running high 9's and Paul couldn't be happier. He doesn't have any issue pushing his T-400 Transmission to the limit in the name of a little speed addiction. You better believe that Paul drives the car on the streets too. If you ever pull up next to a black and white Nova with a massive cowl induction hood, let him be, you don't want to get your feelings hurt.

GM, Kia, Hyundai with a K&N Cabin Air Filter Reduces Odors and Rejuvenates Interior Air Quality

K&N VF2016 Cabin Air Filter for Hyundai, Kia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sedona

The K&N VF2016 Cabin Air Filter will fit many popular GM crossovers, along with late model Hyundai/Kia sedans, the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Kia Sedona

Large car companies like General Motors and Hyundai/Kia, often use the same parts on many different models. This allows them to keep costs low by only manufacturing a single component, like a filtered HVAC system. They can then use this one part on everything from the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata / Sonata Hybrid and 2011-2014 Kia Optima, to the 2012-2016 Kia Azera and 2013-2015 Hyundai Santa Fe. It also allows part manufacturers to keep their overhead low, because the exact same size Hyundai OEM cabin air filter will also work on GM models like the 2010-2016 Chevy Equinox and. 2010-2016 GMC Terrain. But no matter how cost effective their production techniques are, those cabin filters can still cost consumers quite a bit of money over time. Fortunately, the K&N VF2016 cabin air filter is reusable and can provide clean air for the occupants of your vehicle to breathe.

K&N VF2016 Cabin Air Filter for Hyundai, Kia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sedona

The reusable synthetic K&N VF2016 Cabin Air Filter is warrantied for 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty

A filtered climate control system is designed to clean dirt, dust, odors, and allergens from the air, before it reaches the interior. To do this, they install a disposable paper air filter behind the glovebox, and the heated/cooled air is pushed through it before exiting the vents. Pollen, mold spores, dust, and leaves then collect on the filter's surface, usually between the pleats/folds. Over time however, all of that accumulated dirt will start to reduce the amount of air that can flow through the OE cabin filter. This will make the HVAC system have to work much harder to force air through the clogged filter. That built up gunk will also contaminate the cabin air, making it feel musty and stale. Your allergies could also be affected, because those clumped up pollen, mold, and fungus particles can get sucked around the filter and into the cabin.

Paper cabin filters may be cheap to produce, but their performance leaves a lot to be desired. Conversely, the K&N VF2016 cabin air filter uses a much more efficient design. It is made from a special synthetic material that traps contaminants and holds them in place. This allows air to continue to flow through, even when the filter becomes dirty. Each K&N cabin filter also has an electrostatic charge to keep those dirt particles in place and to help attract more dirt. Even microscopic particles of dust, pollen, mold, spores, fungus, mildew, bacteria, germs, and other allergens get removed from the airstream. Then every 12-months or 12,000 miles (depending on road conditions), you simply pull the K&N cabin filter from its compartment and clean it with the K&N Cabin Air Filter Refresh Kit. The special cleaning spray will dislodge the dirt and allergens trapped inside the material, and the refresh spray will restore the electrostatic charge. The whole process is simple, and will reinvigorate the air inside your GM, Hyundai, or Kia crossover.

Because of K&N's extremely high build quality, the K&N VF2016 cabin air filter is backed by a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. It will probably be the last cabin filter you have to buy, and it will not void your factory warranty. To see all of the performance parts that K&N makes for your Chevy, GMC, Hyundai or Kia, simply enter your specific year/make/model into the Search by Vehicle Tool. Or you can use this tool to find a K&N dealer near you.

Ford Mustang Cabin Air Filter Increases Air Conditioner Efficiency and Delivers Cleaner Air

K&N VF2020 Cabin Air Filter for Ford Mustang

For allergy sufferers, the K&N VF2020 Cabin Air Filter will make the 5th generation Ford Mustang a more pleasant place to be

The original idea behind the Ford Mustang was to give young buyers a sporty car that could be customized by the factory. Prior to its arrival in 1964, a car's equipment was determined by the model line: Custom, Deluxe etc. This new pony car however, could be had with all sorts of exciting options, and it literally introduced the idea of ordering equipment a la carte. One of the available features was the "Ford Air Conditioner" for $277.20 ($2,129.36 in today's money). This rare luxury item sucked air in from the outside, forced it over a chunk of ice the size of a glacier, then blasted cold air into your face--bugs dust and all. By the time the 5th generation Ford Mustang came along in 2005, the engineers in Dearborn (the Detroit suburb where Ford is based) had replaced that antiquated HVAC system, with a modern ventilation system that used a paper filter to keep dirt, dust, and other allergens from entering the cabin. However, if you don't change said OEM cabin air filter regularly, you could be breathing in years of accumulated gunk.

Every 2005-2014 Ford Mustang GT, Shelby, V6 is fitted with a thick paper cabin air filter that lives behind an access panel on the firewall. It's designed to remove contaminants from the air before it flows into the cabin. Problem is, these filters collect the dirt on the folded paper surface, and over time, all of that caked up dirt will reduce the amount of air that can flow through the filter and can even create a musty, stale smell in your Mustang's interior.

A K&N VF2020 cabin air filter on the other hand, uses a special synthetic filter material that's been electrostatically charged to attract and hold dirt. As air flows through the K&N cabin air filter, dirt and allergen particles become trapped in the synthetic fibers, and the electrostatic charge helps hold them in place. This design allows for increased airflow, even when the filter gets dirty. Then it can be cleaned simply about every 12-months or 12,000 miles (depending on road conditions) using the K&N Cabin Air Filter Refresh Kit. During allergy season, you can also use the Cleaning Spray and Refresh Spray to quickly remove dirt and allergens and restore the electrostatic properties of the filter.

Because of its increased filtration efficiency, the K&N VF2020 cabin air filter traps dirt, dust, pollen, mold, spores, fungus, mildew, bacteria, germs, and other allergens. If you suffer from allergies, then you know how important it is to remove irritants from the air you breathe. Each K&N cabin air filter is also covered by the 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty, so you know it will continue to work for a very long time.

And remember, K&N makes an entire line of Ford Mustang performance filtration parts that can help turn your pony car into a real thoroughbred. You can view all the air intakes that K&N makes for the Ford Mustang at the Air Intake Systems for the Ford Mustang page and all the air filters that K&N makes for the Ford Mustang at the Air Filters for the Ford Mustang page. You can view all the K&N performance products for any vehicle by using the Search by Vehicle tool and you can find a local K&N retailer by plugging your location into the K&N Dealer Search as well.

Truck Cabin Air Filters: First Line of Defense Against Pollutants and Protector of A/C Systems

Nissan midsize Pathfinder, Frontier, Xterra and Navara Cabin Air Filter

Eighty percent of new trucks built today have cabin filters, including the Nissan midsize Pathfinder, Frontier, Xterra and Navara, all of which can use the K&N VF1001.

You've got work to do, deadlines to meet, stuff to be moved, commutes to complete. Ask a busy man who just hopped out of his Silverado 1500 if it has a truck cabin air filter and he may shrug, saying he has no idea. Ask a mom with four teens in her Yukon Denali if she has had the cabin filter serviced this year, and she may ask if that is the same as an air conditioning filter.

Toyota Tacoma Cabin Air Filter

Many truck cabin air filters are located behind the glove box, as is the VF2005, which fits the Toyota Tacoma.

Who knows if your truck has a cabin air filter? Do you have time to care? And should you? In a single word: yes.

Air pollution is a health issue for the world, and will be forever. As nations around the globe tackle their individual air quality issues, truck cabin filters are a first line of defense against what is still out there. They help everyone, not only asthma and allergy sufferers, the very young and the elderly. They also help keep your truck's ventilation and air conditioning system healthy by providing a clean, unrestricted flow of air.

Does your truck have a cabin filter?
Consult your owner's manual, visit the manufacturer's website, or ask your dealer if your truck has a cabin filter. More than 80 percent of vehicles built today will have an air conditioning filter. They all work, but some work better than others.

Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Yukon Denali Cabin Air Filter

All K&N truck cabin air filters, exemplified by the VF2044 for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Yukon Denali, are constructed out of a special non-woven synthetic material, supported by wire mesh, offering greater filter surface area and sturdiness for regular cleanings.

Truck cabin air filter location will vary by vehicle year, make, and model but is generally installed in one of three places. Most often a cabin filter can be found under the hood near the windshield, underneath the dashboard, or behind the glove box.

It's OK that you may be unaware of this relatively new addition to your truck's cabin air intake system. Cabin air filters have gradually become standard OEM equipment since the turn of the 21st century, so they are a modern convenience that also has health benefits and are simple to maintain by replacing them. Most cabin air filters can be replaced without tools but some require basic hand tools to open the cabin air filter compartment.

Cabin Air Filter Refresher Kit

For a successful cleaning of your K&N truck cabin air filter, use the 99-600 Refresher Kit and let the filter dry completely before spraying with the refresher spray.

Discarding and installing a new one is easy, but they just choke the landfills. K&N has facilitated a greener approach to maintenance since 2014, offering a thrifty replacement truck cabin air filter that is washable and reusable, such as the K&N VF2044 for the Yukon Denali and Silverado, or the VF2005 for the Toyota Tacoma. So let's find out about cabin filters.

What are truck cabin air filters and how do they work?
Cabin air filters were first actively developed in the late 1980s in Europe and Japan, initially out of concern for protecting sensitive drivers and passengers from inhaling pollen and dust. This concern quickly expanded to the need for protecting us all against air contaminated with diesel soot and gaseous substances in metropolitan areas with lots of, um, truck traffic (plus uncombusted industrial smogs) that release hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxides, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and benzene, to name the headliners of the pollutant short list.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) testing and manufacturing standards were drafted in 1994 and updated in 2001 for particulate and odor-reducing functions of cabin filters. The filters K&N produces traps particles and helps to reduce odors. Examples are the K&N VF1001 for Nissan Frontier and Pathfinder and the VF3012 for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.

Many stock cabin air filters are thick, folded paper or some combination of paper and fibers. They are a physical barrier to trap dust, pollen, leaves and other debris and reduce the flow of chemically contaminated air that makes it into the ventilation and air conditioning system. The particles sit on the surface of the filter and eventually build up, forming their own layer, and reducing the incoming flow of air. To keep the air clean in the cabin, these filters are intended to be discarded at least annually.

K&N Cabin Air Filter

K&N introduced the washable, reusable cabin air filter in 2014 and is designing new ones every day.

K&N truck cabin air filters are a single layer of thermally bonded nonwoven synthetic material held in a fan-fold shape, surrounded by molded urethane frame with wire screening. The filter itself has been electrostatically charged to attract and hold dirt. As air flows through the K&N cabin air filter, dirt and allergen particles become trapped in the synthetic fibers, and the electrostatic charge helps hold them in place. This design allows for increased airflow, even as the filter gets dirty. The construction of the K&N cabin filter is intended to allow it to be removed, washed, recharged, and reused, as often as needed, over the lifetime of the truck.

The K&N washable cabin air filter is the first of its kind. Watch the K&N washable cabin air filters overview video for more information on how cabin air filters work.

Why do truck cabin filters need maintenance?
It may be a worn old saying, but "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is as relevant to vehicle health and safety as it is to personal wellness. Just as you change the oil and refresh the fluids in the engine, the rest of the truck's systems need regular check-ups and cleanings. The concept is not exactly "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but following a preventive routine keeps parts from wearing or breaking, and keeps the truck on the road longer.

Besides creating an uncomfortable environment for occupants by no longer trapping dust, fungus, spores, and bacteria, a clogged truck cabin air filter can also contribute to moldy odors and mildew in the cabin, and put a strain on the heating and air conditioning systems. This is a great reason to perhaps coordinate cabin filter changes with annual or semi-annual A/C check-ups.

You can simply remove, discard, and replace the OEM cabin filter with the same stock version, purchased from the dealer at dealership prices. Or, you can invest in a K&N cabin air filter that is washable, reusable, and guaranteed with a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty.

K&N cabin air filters are engineered to meet factory filtration requirements, do not void new vehicle warranties, and are designed to fit precisely into the stock cabin filter compartment. Detailed installation instruction sheets are included with each filter and installation videos are often provided on the specific product web page for the filter that matches your vehicle.

Cleaning your K&N washable cabin air filter works best if you use of the 99-6000 K&N refresher kit and follow these simple steps:

  1. Remove the filter from your vehicle
  2. Spray the cabin filter cleaner onto the filter
  3. Rinse the filter with water to remove all dirt
  4. Air-dry naturally for 20-30 minutes
  5. Apply K&N cabin air filter Refresher™ to the filter media
  6. Re-install the filter back into your vehicle

The keys to a successful service are thoroughly rinsing the cabin filter, letting it dry completely, and using K&N’s Refresher spray. The spray maintains the electrostatic charge so the filter can continue to help capture many types of mold, mildew, spores, fungus, bacteria, and germs while helping to control odors.
